Cardinals Fall to Lakers in Thursday Night Macthup

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team hosted Grand Valley State University on Thursday night in the James E. O'Neil Arena. The Cardinals (14-11, 9-6 GLIAC) fell to the Lakers (23-2, 14-1 GLIAC)

It was a rather slow start for both teams. Kaitlyn Zarycki hit an elbow jumper to open the scoring and Grand Valley answered a minute later. The teams traded buckets back and forth until Emma Dziezgowski hit a huge three-pointer for SVSU to put them up 7-5 headed into the first media timeout. Jessica Massey hit the front end of her pair of free throws to tie the game at eight a piece before the Lakers went on a 5-2 run to close the quarter.

The Cardinals answered the Laker's, opening, 10-2 run with a layup from Saniaa Walker to cut the lead to six. Jessica Massey and Lauren Sollom hit a set of free throws to add to Saginaw Valley's total. Grand Valley would close out the half on a 4-0 run and the Cardinals would trail 17-31 headed into the half.

Zarycki opened the scoring in the second half hitting a jumper from beyond the arc and cutting the lead to 11. The Cardinals were met with a 12-3 run from the Lakers and were outscored 16 -20 in the quarter.

SVSU finished the game with their best quarter of the night, but it was still not enough to defeat the opposition. Kaitlyn Zarycki and Emma Dziezgowski led the scoring for the Lady Cards with 15 a piece. Dziezgowski knocked down all of her points from range.
