Women's Basketball Faces a Tough Loss to Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team suffered a tough loss on Saturday, February 4th to Michigan Technological University. The Cardinals (12-10, 7-6 GLIAC) struggled against the Huskies (19-4, 11-2 GLIAC) losing by 20 points.

Kaitlyn Zarycki led SVSU in scoring with 22 points while fellow seniors Tori DePerry and Jessica Massey contributed nine and seven respectively.

The Cardinals made the first basket of the game on a Tyler Scheid three-pointer on the first possession of the game. The Huskies would answer with a 12-0 run until Zarycki made two free throws to end the first quarter. Leaving the Cardinals trailing 14-5.

In the second quarter, the lady cards found their footing on the offensive side of the ball where Zarycki opened the quarter with an and-one bucket and converted cutting the lead to eight. Michigan Tech showed its teeth and went on a 13-2 run holding SVSU to 14 points in the second.

The third quarter was the Cardinal's best performing quarter while they held the Huskies to just 13 points and posted 15 of their own. SVSU went on an 11-2 run to start the quarter thanks to the help of a Jessica Massey layup to get the run started.

Michigan Tech answered in the fourth quarter going up by 19 early and would hold the game from then on. SVSU remains the four seed in the GLIAC with a tiebreaker over Northern Michigan thanks to a win on Thursday.
