DePerry Reaches 1000 Point Milestone as Cardinals Rout Lakers

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team took on Lake Superior State University Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup. The Cardinals (10-9, 5-4 GLIAC) defeated the Lakers (5-12, 2-7 GLIAC) 70-50 in a dominating defensive performance.

Tyler Scheid won the jump ball and it was all Cardinals from then on. Kaitlyn Zarycki opened the scoring on the first possession with a layup assisted by Tori DePerry. Saginaw Valley State went on a 12-4 run early which included DePerry's 1000th point on a layup 4:03 into the game. Lake Superior State ended the first with a 9-2 run bringing the game to a 26-19 first-quarter score.

The second quarter was a defensive battle for both squads. The two teams were only able to notch eight points apiece while the Cardinals recorded six steals and the Lakers three. Lake Superior was held to 36.4 percent shooting by Saginaw Valley State on 11 field goal attempts. Jessica Massey and Kaitlyn Zarycki had two blocks and three steals respectively.

The Cardinals got off to a hot start offensively while maintaining great defense in the third quarter. SVSU went on a 10-0 run to start with the help of a Tyler Scheid three-pointer and Zarycki burying two free throws given by a Laker technical foul. On the defensive end of the floor, the Cardinals tallied six steals and held LSSU to eight points again in the third.

Emma Dziezgowski opened the scoring for SVSU in the fourth quarter with a wing three. SVSU took flight from there and went on to harbor the Lakers for the rest of the contest outscoring them 18-15 in the fourth quarter.
