Kaitlyn Zarycki Scores 35 to Propel Cardinals Past Bulldogs

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team (9-9, 4-4 GLIAC) defeated the Ferris State University Bulldogs (11-6, 4-4 GLIAC) on Thursday night. The Cardinals used spectacular performances by Kaitlyn Zarycki and Tori DePerry to propel themselves to the 65-47 win over the Bulldogs.

Kaitlyn Zarycki scored 35 points in the win leaving her only four points short of her career high. Tori DePerry added 22 points for the Cardinals and fell one rebound shy of a double-double. The duo scored 26 of the 28 first-half points for the women's team.

SVSU fell behind quickly in the game 12-1 and did not score their first field goal until 8 minutes into the game. The Cardinals only scored three field goals in the first all of which came from Zarycki or DePerry. A solid defensive effort by everyone on the floor allowed Saginaw Valley State to stay in the game as they trailed 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals found their stride in the second half and with only Zarycki and DePerry scoring until Saniaa Walker added a left-handed layup to help cut the deficit to eight. Zarycki scored two more quick layups to cut the lead to four, forcing Ferris State to call a timeout.

SVSU started the second half hot with two quick buckets separating the contest by one point in favor of the Bulldogs. For the next four minutes, the two teams traded buckets back and forth until the halfway mark of the third quarter. Tyler Scheid made her first basket of the night with 3:57 remaining giving SVSU its first lead of the game.

SVSU continued its second-half dominance into the fourth quarter outscoring Ferris State 21-6. Zarycki added 13 points and five rebounds along with DePerry's six points and three defensive rebounds. The Cardinals went on a 14-3 run in the fourth which propelled them to the victory after trailing in the first half

The SVSU Women's basketball team takes on Lake Superior State University in a GLIAC matchup on Saturday, January 21 where Tori DePerry will look to eclipse the 1000-point mark in her career. She is currently six points shy. The game between the Lakers and Cardinals will tip at 1:00 p.m.
