Cardinals Outpaced at Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell 71-66 on the road against Cedarville to end 2022. The Cardinals (7-6) surrendered a 10-point lead in the final quarter of play to suffer a setback in the final game of the year.

Tori DePerry led the SVSU in scoring with 23 points. She was one rebound short of registering a double-double in the game. Tyler Sheid tallied 14 points and nine rebounds. Emma Dziezgowski was the final Cardinal to score double-digits with 13.

Saginaw Valley got things going with a 5-0 run to take the early lead. An 8-0 run that was highlighted by two three-point jumpers by Dziezgowski pushed the Cardinal advantage to 21-11 before the quarter ended with an eight-point SVSU edge.

Saginaw Valley held onto the lead throughout the second quarter despite the Yellow Jackets trimming the margin to five points at two points during the 10-minute period. Tyler Scheid hit from distance in the final two minutes to cap the scoring for the first half as the Cardinals entered the locker room on top, 36-28.

A 5-0 run for SVSU started the third stanza and extended the margin to 13 points with less than 60 seconds off the clock. The scoring margin stagnated throughout the quarter as the Cardinals held a 10-point edge heading into the final quarter of play.

Cedarville used a 5-0 run to half the deficit in the opening two minutes of the fourth. The Yellow Jackets took the lead with an 8-0 run with 6:01 left in regulation. The lead changed hands for the remainder of the game and Cedarville made its free throws down the stretch to finalize the outcome.

The SVSU women's basketball team will return to the comforts of home as they host Michigan Tech in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Thursday, January 5, 2023. The game against the Huskies will tip off at 6:00 PM inside O'Neill Arena.
