Late Push Sends Cardinals Over Visiting Panthers in Home Opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Kaitlyn Zarycki poured in a game-high 24 points, and Tori DePerry added 16, to propel the Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team to a 75-62 non-conference win over Ohio Dominican University in the Cardinals home opener on Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Cardinals used a quick start to improve to 2-2 on the season, while ODU drops to 1-2 overall.

How it Happened:

  • The Cardinals jumped out early, leading 21-7 after the first quarter thanks to holding ODU to 36 percent field goal shooting.
  • Saginaw Valley took a 33-27 lead into the intermission.
  • But the Panthers fought back from the early deficit to take a 42-40 lead on a layup by Trinity Ramos with 4 minutes and 31 seconds left in the third quarter.
  • The teams traded points with neither side leading by more than four until the fourth when the Cardinals put some distance from the Panthers.
  • After ODU's Madelyn Fearon drained a trey to tie it 50-50 at the 9:25 mark, DePerry made a jump shot on SVSU's following possession to put the Cardinals back in front for good.
  • With SVSU leading 57-56 at the 5:50 mark, the Cardinals ended the afternoon on an 18—6 run to seal the victory. Victoria Stafford scored seven of her nine points during this decisive stretch, and Zarycki matched her with seven during this time.
  • Saginaw Valley dominated the point where it outscored ODU 44-28 and outrebounded the Panthers 45-22.
  • The contest featured eight ties and eight lead changes.
