Cardinals Strike Oil with Road Win at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team got game highs of 27 points and 10 rebounds from Tori DePerry as the Cardinals used a quick start en route to a 68-57 win over host University of Findlay on Saturday at the Croy Physical Education Center.

Both teams are now 1-1 on the season after two days of the GLIAC/GMAC Crossover.

How it happened:

  • The teams were fairly even in most statistical categories but the Cardinals' aggressiveness going to the rim proved to be the difference as SVSU made 25 of 31 free throw attempts for 80.6 percent.
  • Saginaw Valley outscored UF 18-8 in the first quarter to get off to a good start. The Cardinals shot 53.8 percent (7-13) from the field over the first 10 minutes, when they held the Oilers to just a 23.5 clip (4-17).
  • The Cardinals, who trailed just once after the Oilers made the first basket, took a 30-25 advantage into the locker room.
  • After Findlay got to within 30-27 in the third quarter, SVSU responded with a 16-4 run over a span of 5 minutes and 46 seconds to take a commanding 46-31 advantage at the 3:16 mark. The 15 points was SVSU's largest lead of the contest, with DePerry's nine points the key during that stretch.
  • In the fourth quarter, Findlay eventually cut the deficit to 59-55 on a pair of Serena Sammarone free throws with 2:11 left.
  • But SVSU iced the win by outscoring the Oilers 9-2 down the stretch to seal the 11-point victory.

Inside the Box Score:

  • DePerry finished by making 7 of 11 field goal attempts and she was 13-for-15 at the free throw stripe. The 27 points proved to also be a career high.
  • Kaitlyn Zarycki helped the SVSU cause with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while posting four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Teammate Jessica Massey added nine points, eight rebounds and a game-high four assists.
  • For the Oilers, Kate Ellis and Sammarone both came off the bench to lead UF with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
