BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Ferris State University 82-68 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals on Wednesday night from Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
SVSU closes the season with a 16-11 overall record and an 11-8 mark in GLIAC play.
How it happened:
- The Cardinals started strong, getting a 3-point basket from Tyler Scheid, and baskets from Kaitlyn Zarycki and Maddie Barrie.
- SVSU opened up a six-point lead with 2:30 left in the quarter after a Zarycki jumper.
- Both teams struggled towards the end of the quarter, and SVSU held a 16-10 advantage after one.
- A Zarycki layup built the Cardinal lead to eight points in the second quarter.
- Ferris State responded with a 15-0 run to take a 26-18 lead.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Rachel Rustad helped slow the Bulldogs down.
- Rustad hit another 3-pointer with 52 seconds left in the half, before a layup by Ferris State allowed the Bulldogs to take a 32-29 halftime lead.
- SVSU quickly jumped ahead in the third quarter after layups by Barrie and Tori DePerry.
- The Bulldogs opened up a six-point lead with 7:43 left in the period.
- A layup by Rustad with 4:55 left in the quarter put the Cardinals back in front before the Bulldogs took a five-point advantage heading into the final quarter.
- After a Maddie Maloney jumper with 7:17 left in the game, Ferris State went on an 11-2 run and opened up a 10-point lead.
- The Cardinals were unable to answer, as the Bulldogs led by as many as 16 points en route to victory.
Inside the Box Score:
- Maddie Maloney led SVSU with 13 points and four assists. The senior was 5-of-9 from the field.
- Rustad scored a career-high 11 points and was 3-of-3 from 3-point range.
- Zarycki and DePerry posted 10 points each. Zarycki added eight assists and seven rebounds. She led the Cardinals in scoring this season with 505 points.
- SVSU was 26-of-54 from the field, 8-of-21 from deep, and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
- Adrienne Anderson led the Bulldogs with a game-high 22 points.
