Late rally falls short, SVSU falls to Northwood 74-67

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team traveled to Northwood University for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivalry matchup on Saturday.

After falling behind by 25 points midway through the third quarter, the Cardinals rallied in the fourth, cutting the deficit to as little as six, but the Timberwolves held on for their ninth straight win. The 74-67 loss drops SVSU to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • Northwood jumped up early with a 12-2 run to build a 14-4 lead four minutes into the game.
  • The Cardinals chipped away and cut the deficit to 22-15 at the end of the first.
  • The Timberwolves retook control early in the second with a pair of 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 13.
  • Northwood continued to build its lead the rest of the way in the second and took a 43-22 advantage into the locker room. The Timberwolves shot 7-of-11 from deep in the first half.
  • SVSU cut a once 25-point Northwood lead to 13 late in the third, but the Timberwolves answered with a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left by Alana Nelson.
  • The Cardinals outscored the Timberwolves 23-14 in the fourth and cut the deficit to five points after a Tyler Scheid 3-pointer with 25 seconds to play.

Inside the Box Score:

  • After being held off the scoreboard until the 3:03 mark of the third quarter, Kaitlyn Zarycki finished with a team-high 15 points. She added six rebounds and seven assists.
  • Tori DePerry finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • The Cardinals shot 24-of-57 from the field, 6-of-19 from deep, and 13-of-15 from the line.
  • Ellie Taylor and Alana Nelson scored 13 points each to lead five Northwood shooters in double-digits.
