Cardinals overcome slow start to top Panthers on the road

COLUMBUS - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team edged past Ohio Dominican University by a final score of 52-49 on Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio, as the Cardinals move to 3-0 overall on the season.

How it happened:

  • The game started out as a defensive slugfest, as the Cardinals got on the board first thanks to back-to-back layups by Tori DePerry. SVSU led after one quarter 6-2.
  • In the second quarter, the Panthers began the period on an 11-0 run before a basket by Kaitlyn Zarycki
  • Ohio Dominican closed the first half on a 10-4 run and took a 23-15 halftime lead. 
  • The third quarter was a back and forth affair, as SVSU outscored the Panthers 15-12 and trailed by five heading into the final period of regulation. 
  • In the fourth, SVSU went on a 13-4 run before taking a timeout with 4:09 remaining in the game. 
  • The Panthers came out of the timeout and scored the next five points of the game and took a one-point lead with 1:16 left. Following made free throws by Tyler Schied and Maddie Maloney, the Panthers got to within one point with 10 seconds remaining, but were unable to tie the game as Maloney iced the game with a pair of free throws.

Inside the Box Score:

  • DePerry led the Cardinals with 18 points on 9-16 shooting. The junior also grabbed six rebounds.
  • Schied led all players with 11 rebounds.
  • Three other Cardinals scored in double figures with Maddie Barrie finishing with 11 points, while Zarycki and Maloney had 10 points each. Maloney played all 40 minutes for the Cardinals. 
  • SVSU went 21-61 from the field, 5-22 from three-point range, and 5-8 from the free-throw line, while Ohio Dominican shot 16-46 from the field, 9-21 from deep, and 8-8 from the free-throw line.
  • Kennedy Schlabach had 20 points to lead the Panthers.
