Women's Basketball Falls to #2 Ashland in GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals

ASHLAND, Ohio -- Sealing a bid to the 2020 GLIAC Tournament last week, the SVSU Women's Basketball squad secured the No. 8 seed and faced No. 1 Ashland University on Tuesday (Mar. 3) night in the quarterfinal round. The Eagles led throughout the game, coming a way with a 79-55 win over the Cardinals in Kates Gymnasium.

AU remains undefeated at 29-0 overall on the season while the Cardinals finish their 2019-20 campaign with a 12-17 overall mark. The Eagles move on to the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals to face Parkside, which defeated Northern Michigan on Tuesday.

The Eagles posted a 22-11 edge in the first quarter and a 21-17 advantage in the second frame to take a 43-28 lead into the halftime break. Maddie Barrie and Kaitlyn Zarycki each had nine first half points for the visitors. 

In the third, Ashland had another decisive advantage of 23-11, which gave it a 66-39 lead heading into the final quarter of action. Saginaw Valley outscored the Eagles 16-13 in the fourth but that was not enough, as AU finished for the 79-55 win.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Barrie finished with 12 points and three rebounds.
  • Zarycki added 11 points, three rebounds and two steals. 
  • Tori DePerry reached double-figures in scoring as well, netting 10 points with two boards, an assist and steal.
  • Maddie Maloney had seven points, six assists, four boards and two steals.

SVSU graduates three seniors from this year's team, as Mariah Cook, Aaliah Hill and Katie Schultz have finished their careers for the Cardinals.
