SVSU Women's Basketball secures GLIAC postseason bid despite setback to Northwood

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women hosted the Northwood University Timberwolves on Thursday (Feb. 27) night in the 2019-20 regular season finale. Northwood would come out ahead in the end, claiming a 68-57 victory over Saginaw Valley.

The teams finished deadlocked at 8-12 in GLIAC play and the Cardinals won the tiebreaker to advance to the annual league tournament as the No. 8 seed. 

Northwood had a big first quarter, taking a 22-13 lead over SVSU into the first break. The Cards outscored the Timberwolves 15-13 in the second, cutting into the deficit a bit and putting NU ahead 35-28 at halftime. 

The T-Wolves posted a 16-13 edge in the third frame to take a 10-point lead (51-41) into the fourth. That would see the visitors come out with a 17-16 edge, sealing an 11-point victory at 68-57 after leading for the entire game. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Maddie Maloney led the way for Saginaw Valley with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • Mariah Cook finished with 11 points, adding four boards and a pair of assists.
  • Kaitlyn Zarycki had nine points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
  • Tori DePerry added eight points eight two boards, an assist and steal while Tyler Scheid had nine points off the bench with five rebounds and an assist.

Saginaw Valley advances to the 2020 GLIAC Tournament, which is the program's first appearance in the postseason tournament since the 2016-17 campaign.
