UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women's Basketball team dropped a hard-fought GLIAC matchup at home to the Ferris State University Bulldogs on Sunday (Jan. 12) at SVSU's O'Neill Arena by a final score of 82-77. Kaitlyn Zarycki had a big game on Sunday, netting a career-high 27 points while grabbing a game-high seven boards versus the Bulldogs.
Despite clawing back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to within five, it wasn't enough as the Cards are now 7-8 overall on the season and 3-4 in GLIAC play. Ferris State improves to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the league.
The entire first half was tight, with Ferris State leading by an 18-17 score through the first 10 minutes of action. Maddie Barrie led the way for the home team in the opening quarter with seven points.
SVSU outscored the visitors by a 22-20 count in the second quarter, using five more points from Barrie, six from Zarycki and a six-spot from Tori DePerry to carry a 39-28 edge into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Saginaw Valley was limited to 13 points while the Bulldogs scored 23, taking a 61-52 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
The visitors would almost double that lead with 8:10 showing on the clock in the final quarter, taking a 17-point lead with the score 69-52.
The Cards would work their way back, however, trimming that deficit to just five points (79-74) with 53 seconds left as Zarycki made good on a pair of free throws.
Time would not be on Saginaw Valley's side though and Ferris would escape with the 82-77 victory.

- Zarycki netted the career-best 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting, adding the game-high seven boards, four assists, two steals and a block. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
- Barrie finished with a dozen points and six rebounds.
- Maddie Maloney had double-figures in scoring as well, going for 10 points with four assists and two steals.
- Ashley Buchholz chipped-in with 11 points and two boards.
- Mariah Cook added eight points eith three boards and two helpers and DePerry finished with six points.
