UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell 68-64 to Purdue Northwest in a GLIAC match up that opened 2020 despite a career night from sophomore point guard Maddie Maloney.
Maloney tied the single game program record with seven three-pointers and posted a career-high 21 points in the contest.
With the defeat, the Cardinals fall to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC play while Purdue Northwest improves to 3-9 overall and 2-2 in league action.
The Cardinal offense was slow to start as they found themselves in an early 10-3 deficit to the Pride. Maddie Barrie registered 11 of her 13 points for SVSU in the first quarter, however, helping give the Cardinals a six point lead at the end of the frame 20-14.
Saginaw Valley was held to just nine points in the second quarter and the Cardinals would enter the locker room down at halftime, 30-29.
The Cardinals out-rebounded the Pride, 24-16, in the first half of play. Barrie shot 3-5 from beyond the arc and led the Cardinals in scoring through the first two quarters of play.
The Pride came out of the locker room ready to play as the Cardinals found themselves down by 10 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter as the score stood at 45-35. Maddie Maloney had nine of her 21 points in the third quarter shooting, draining three triples.
SVSU fought back in the final quarter, as Maloney hit two big three-point shots late in the fourth but the late push would come up short as the Pride came out on top in the end, 68-64.

- Maloney had a game and career-high 21 points and added two rebounds, an assist and three steals. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after tying the single game record with seven triples as well.
- Barrie and Zarycki both reached double-figures in scoring as well, netting 13 points-apiece. They each had three boards added to the point total.
- Geers had seven points for SVSU with five boards, a steal and an assist.
- Ashley Buchholz added eight points, four boards, two assists and a pair of blocks.
