Lady Cards Victorious at Northwood, 58-52

MIDLAND -- The Cardinal Women's Basketball team hit the road for a league matchup at Northwood University on Sunday (Dec. 15) afternoon. Saginaw Valley had a solid showing in the rivalry game and came away with a six-point victory over the Timberwolves, 58-52.

The score remained tight throughout the first quarter and both sides shot well from the floor. SVSU hit on 8-of-13 tries for a 61.5% mark while Northwood was 50.0% (8-16) through the first 10 minutes. The Timberwolves led by a pair as the opening quarter was over at 19-17. Maddie Barrie had five points to lead the way for the Cardinals while Tori DePerry and Kaitlyn Geers each had four.

SVSU went on a 10-0 run to open the second quarter and outscored the Timberwolves by a 17-8 margin in the frame. A Kaitlyn Zarycky drive and layup would finish the half, sending the Cardinals to a 34-27 lead at the break. The Cards shot 53.8% in the first half while Northwood was at 34.4%.

The third quarter saw SV open up a lead of 11 points with the score 38-27 after Barrie nailed a triple for the visitors. Northwood would erase most of that lead, however, closing-out the half strong and trailing the Cards by a score of 45-43 as the teams headed to the final quarter of action.

Saginaw Valley outscored Northwood by a 13-9 margin in the final quarter, staying solid throughout and sealing a 58-52 win.

From Head Coach Jenny Pruett

"Today was an incredible win at our rival's place. We played through adversity and grew as a team with the adversity we fought through. We will go to work this next week and focus on boxing-out and now allowing as many offensive rebounds. We had great support from our Cardinal fans and it felt like a home game. We appreciate all of the support from our friends and family!"
