Huskies separate late in victory over SVSU, 79-54

HOUGHTON -- Continuing its road trip through the Upper Peninsula, the Cardinal Women's Basketball team took on the second straight GLIAC North Division leader in the Michigan Tech University Huskies on Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon. After hanging close throughout after three quarters, Michigan Tech got hot in the fourth quarter and separated for a 79-54 victory. 

The Huskies worked their way out to a lead and finished the first quarter with a 21-12 edge. Maddie Barrie led the way offensively with six points while Hannah Settingsgaard added four in the first 10 minutes. 

Saginaw Valley posted a 15-12 advantage in the second frame, pulling the game closer and making the halftime deficit 33-27. Settingsgaard finished the opening half with 14 points while Barrie finished with the six she had after the first. 

Both teams went for 17 points in the third quarter, keeping the score separation at six points with Michigan Tech leading 50-44.

The Huskies separated in the fourth, outscoring the visitors by a 29-10 score in the final 10 minutes to finish-off a 79-54 victory.

  • Settingsgaard earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors after posting a team-high 14 points.
  • Aaliah Hill added eight points and eight rebounds. 
  • Barrie added eight points and four boards for the Cardinals. 
  • Kaitlyn Geers chipped-in with five rebounds and four points. 
  • The Huskies had a narrow 34-33 edge on the glass and had a 40-24 lead in points in the paint.

Saginaw Valley returns home to O'Neill Arena for a string of four consecutive home league games. That string begins Thursday (Feb. 14) against Grand Valley State University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at SVSU.
