MARQUETTE -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Basketball team began a weekend road trip through the upper peninsula with a Thursday night game at Northern Michigan University. Taking on a tough opponent in the GLIAC North-leading Wildcats, the Cardinals would end up falling by a final score of 56-38 in Marquette.
After the first 10 minutes of action, the Cards trailed by a 17-10 score. Five different SVSU players had two points-apiece in the spread-out attack.
The second quarter saw the Wildcats post a 15-12 advantage, taking a 10-point lead into halftime with the score 32-22. Maddie Barrie recorded seven points in the second to lead the way for the Cards.
Northern Michigan held Saginaw Valley to just six points in the third quarter, scoring 16 of their own to carry a 48-28 lead heading into the fourth and final frame.
In the fourth, SVSU had 10 points while NMU was held to eight points. That wasn't enough for the Cardinals, however, as Northern Michigan closed-out for the 18-point victory at 56-38.
Inside the Boxscore
- Barrie led the way with a team-high 11 points, adding five rebounds while shooting 4-of-7 from the floor. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
- Maddie Maloney added eight points in the second half for the Cardinals with three rebounds, an assist and steal.
- Mariah Cook netted six points while Aaliah Hill had a team-best six rebounds.
- NMU shot 36.7% from the field while SVSU was at 24.5% for the game.
- The Wildcats forced 15 Cardinal turnovers while committing eight.
- Northern Michigan posted a 40-35 edge on the glass and 20-4 lead in the paint as well.

Saginaw Valley continues on the trip with a Saturday (Feb. 9) stop at Michigan Tech. Tip-off for that contest is set for 12:00 p.m. against the Huskies in Houghton.
