Cardinal Women drop 64-46 matchup at #9 Grand Valley

ALLENDALE -- The Lady Cardinal Women's Basketball team traveled to face Grand Valley State on Thursday in league action. After a slow start, Saginaw Valley could not overcome the No. 9 nationally-ranked Lakers and dropped the matchup on the road by a final score of 64-46. 

The first half was dominated by the Lakers, outscoring SVSU 22-7 in the first quarter and adding a 14-9 edge in the second frame to carry a 36-16 lead into the break.

Transfer Aaliah Hill, playing in her first game for Saginaw Valley, had eight first half points while Abby Duffy added six rebounds to lead SV. 

SVSU opened third quarter action by scoring the first seven points, trimming the deficit to 36-23. The Cards outscored the Lakers by a 19-16 count in the third, trimming the deficit to 17 points at 52-35 headed to the fourth and final quarter. 

That final 10 minutes would see Saginaw Valley hang tough, scoring 11 points to the Lakers' 12, but the home team closed-out for the 18-point victory at 64-46.  

Inside the Boxscore

  • Hill, playing in her first contest for SVSU as a transfer, led the Cardinals with 14 points offensively. She added two rebounds, two steals and an assist in her 24 minutes of action off the bench. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game.
  • Hannah Settingsgaard added 12 points with six rebounds and an assist.
  • Abby Duffy had nine points while matching a game-high with 10 boards.
  • GV shot 48.3% from the floor while SVSU was 37.5%.
  • The Lakers had a 36-26 edge on the glass and SVSU had a 16-8 lead in bench scoring.
  • GVSU's Cassidy Boensch had a game-high 32 points and added 10 rebounds.
