UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women's Basketball team finished strong on Saturday (Jan. 5) afternoon at home versus Parkside, outscoring the visitors for the final three quarters to secure a 77-72 victory in GLIAC action.
It marks the second straight win for SVSU in moving the Cardinals to 3-10 overall on the season and an even 3-3 in the GLIAC. Parkside falls to 4-8 on the season and 2-4 in league play.
Saginaw Valley had to shake-off a tough opening quarter that saw Parkside run out to a 26-10 lead after 10 minute. The Cardinals bounced-back to outscore the visitors by a 19-10 margin in the second but trailed by a narrow 36-31 score heading into the break.
The solid play would continue into the third frame, as the Cards claimed their first lead of the game with 5:50 showing on the clock when Hannah Settingsgaard drilled a three-pointer to put the home team up 42-20. SVSU would continue and carry a 51-48 lead into the final quarter.
A Maddie Barrie triple gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the contest (8) at 56-48 as 8:30 remained.
The Rangers worked their way back and claimed a 58-56 lead with 4:37 left but the Cards pushed the lead back out to seven points a couple of times, with the second at 67-60 as 47 ticks were left in the game.
With the visitors forced to foul, they were able to hit a pair of three-pointers and eventually trimmed the Cardinal lead to 72-70 with 21 seconds left.
Saginaw Valley, however, was able to hold strong and use strong free throw shooting down the stretch to claim the 77-72 win.
Inside the Boxscore
- Settingsgaard was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after posting a team-high 19 points with six rebounds and an assist. She was 6-8 shooting and 4-4 from downtown.
- Maddie Maloney added 17 points with three assists and two rebounds. She finished 11-12 from the free throw line and 7-8 down the stretch to help seal the victory.
- Abby Duffy had her ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 11 boards.
- Kaitlyn Geers had eight points with three rebounds and two assists while Mariah Cook netted seven points, four helpers and three boards.
- SVSU shot 44.0% from the floor while the Rangers hit on 42.0% of their tries.
- The edge on the glass went to SVSU 38-30.
- Parkside posted a 32-24 advantage in the points in the paint category.
