Ferris State takes down SVSU in GLIAC Action

BIG RAPIDS — The SVSU Women's Basketball team fell to Ferris State in a tough road game at Jim Wink Arena Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon. The Cardinals regained the lead heading into the fourth quarter, but with a final 10 minute surge where the Bulldogs posted there highest scoring quarter of the night with 28 points, Saginaw Valley headed to a 78-67 loss against FSU. 

Ferris State held the lead for the entire first quarter, heading into the second up, 24-17.

Francesca Coury led the teams offense, hitting her double-digit figure of 12 points with her second triple of the night, putting the Cardinals within one (31-30) of the leading Bulldogs with four minutes remaining in the half. 

Saginaw Valley outscored Ferris State 14-11 in the second quarter. 

FSU ends the half with a five point run stopped by Anna Hall's good free throw. The Cardinals trailed 35-31 at the half, yet the team outshot the Bulldogs in field goals, shooting 34.5% to FSU's 33.3%. Saginaw Valley also went 5-for-12 in triples, shooting 41.7%, while Ferris State held a 16.7% at the arc. 

The Cardinals kept on rolling in the third quarter, with Laurel Jacqmain notching in the first four SVSU buckets to come within one once again, 38-37, of the Ferris State Bulldogs. 

Four point Bulldog run puts the Cardinals behind again, but with the help of Hall once again the Cardinals are behind by one (42-41) a the media timeout. 

With 3:20 remaining, Jacqmain's bucket puts SVSU and FSU knotted up, 46-46. 

Hall helps out down the stretch and with less then one minute remaining in the third quarter, the Cardinals take the lead 51-50. One more good free throw from Kaitlyn Geers gives SVSU a 52-50 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action. 

The Bulldogs were not ready to give up, posting a night-high of 28 points in the fourth quarter, while Saginaw Valley notched 15. 

SVSU falls to Ferris State, 78-67, in a GLIAC matchup, splitting the 2017-18 season series, 1-1. 

Inside the Box Score:

  • Jacqmain's impressive second half gives her the team-high and career-high of 24 points on the night and seven boards, earning her the "meijer" player of the game accolades. 
  • Hall led with five steals and notched her career-high of 18 points. 
  • Coury added her career-high 19 points seven assists. She had seven boards, as well. 
  • Saginaw Valley out shot the Bulldogs 47.4% to 16.7% from the arc. 
  • SVSU earned 13 points of 19 forced turnovers.

The Cardinals will return home for three games, starting with Michigan Tech Thursday (Feb. 8) night at 6 p.m. in O'Neill Arena.
