UNIVERSITY CENTER — The SVSU Women's Basketball team opened up 2018 with a conference win over Purdue Northwest Thursday (Jan. 4) evening. The Cardinals were up by ten at the half and went on to win 60-52 over the Pride.
Katie Schultz opens up the contest with a basket underneath to go up 2-0 with 8:23 left in the quarter. After the Pride jumps ahead 4-2, Hannah Settingsgarrd posts the next five points for SVSU to take the back the lead over Purdue Northwest, 7-4.
After a responding five point run from the Pride (9-7) with 3:07 to go, Simone Comers layup is good after a PNW turnover puts the teams knotted up, 9-9. The Cardinals extend the lead to 13-9 before a Pride triple shortens their deficit to one, 13-12, with just over a minute remaining.
Another triple from Purdue Northwest puts the Pride ahead 15-13 to end first quarter ahead of the Cardinals.
With a huge five point run for Saginaw Valley, the Cardinals get back to tie the Pride, 18-18, with 7:42 left to play in the half. With a layup from Kaitlyn Geers with five minutes remaining, the Cardinals take their first lead of the second quarter, 22-21.
Saginaw Valley went on to extend the lead by nine to go up 30-21 with just 2:32 to go in the second quarter. The teams headed into the locker room with SVSU ahead of PNW, 33-23.
Kierra Crockett and Geers led the Cardinals at the half with 6 points each.
With a huge steal for Laurel Jacqmain to start out the third, the Cardinals extend their lead to 13 with seven minutes to go, 36-23. Saginaw Valley would remain on top of the Pride for the remainder of the quarter and would go into the final 10 minutes of action leading 47-37 over Purdue Northwest.
Jacqmain hit her double-digit figures with the first bucket of the fourth quarter. PNW fought back to get within in two (50-48) with 5:51 left in the contest, but would never regain the lead. Saginaw Valley State went on to take the victory, 60-52, over the Pride in O'Neill Arena.
Inside the Box Score:
- Jacqmain posted a team high of 14 points and three steals in tonight's win over PNW, earning the "Meijer" Player of the Game honors. She added five rebounds and two assists, as well.
- Settingsgaard notched in nine points and two steals.
- Abby Duffy led the team with eight boards.
- Crockett was the leading scorer for the Cardinals bench with eight points and added four rebounds.
- Anna Hall led SVSU with four assists. She also recorded eight points and four boards.
- Geers contributed six points and six boards.
- The Cardinals earned 21 points off the 20 forced Pride turnovers.

"I really liked the effort we played with tonight! We were consistent and intentional in wanting to compete and play together and that is where it has to start with us! The stat sheet was indicative of the game being a total team effort and that's the reason we were able to come out with the victory! Now we will spend some time getting ready for the next game and see if we can carry over that effort!"

The Cardinals will head to Allendale, Mich. Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon to take on GLIAC member Grand Valley State in a conference matchup. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. after the conclusion of the SVSU men's game at 1 p.m.
