Saginaw Valley Falls in Final Game of 2017 to the Flyers, 74-45

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Saginaw Valley State Women's Basketball team fell to Lewis University Saturday (Dec. 30) afternoon. The Cardinals trailed early on by 34 at the half and later fell to the Flyers 74-45 in O'Neill Arena for the final game of 2017.

The Cardinals opened up the first quarter with a triple from Anna Hall to go up 3-2 for the first lead of the game for SVSU. Hall posted the first five out of six shots for Saginaw Valley before exiting the floor with Lewis leading 11-3. Abby Duffy and Hannah Settingsguaard respond after the 11 point run from the Flyers with two buckets to have a 5-0 run for the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley trailed by 10 (22-12) heading into the second quarter against Lewis University. 

Kaitlyn Geers enters the the second quarter with back-to-back scoring shots to shorten the deficit to 10 (26-16) with 8:06 to go in the half.  Lewis responded posting the largest lead of the half of 25 to head into halftime ahead of the SVSU Cardinals, 47-22. 

With a nine-point run to start out the second half from the Flyers, Saginaw Valley fell behind by 34 (56-22) within the first two minutes of action. This led to be the largest lead of night for Lewis. 

SVSU responded with three buckets to post a run of seven (56-29) with 6:28 left in the third. With a couple of the Flyers baskets turned the deficit back to 30, but the Cardinals responded with their largest run of the night of eight at the 2:52 mark to trail by the lowest amount against Lewis at 22 (59-37). 

The Cardinals earned their best quarter of the night, matching the Flyers with 18 points each in the third. Saginaw Valley headed into the final 10 minutes trailing Lewis, 65-40. 

The fourth was opened with Geers heading into double digits with a good layup. She led the team with 10 points and four boards on the match up against Lewis. 

With the lowest scoring quarter for both teams (LU 9, SVSU 5), the Flyers finished off the night with a 74-45 win over Saginaw Valley to put Lewis at 9-4 and the Cardinals at 2-10 to end 2017. 

Inside the Boxscore: 

  • Geers ended the night leading the Cardinals with 10 points, four boards and the solo block of the night, earning herself the "Meijer" player of the game. 
  • Kierra Crockett tied Geers with four boards and added seven points. 
  • Rozhane WellsLaurel JacqmainAnna Hall all contributed three rebounds against the Flyers. 
  • Hall led with three assists. 
  • Duffy and Jacqmain each had six points. 
  • SVSU earned 20 points off the 18 Lewis turnovers. 
  • The Cardinals led with a 10-7 margin in steals over the Flyers. 
  • The SVSU bench earned 26 points.

The Cardinals will return to action in the 2018 portion of the season at home against GLIAC member Purdue Northwest on Jan. 4. The Pride is coming off a 62-57 win over Indianapolis on Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in O'Neill Arena.
