Duffy's Career Night Leads Cardinals to Victory Over the Bulldogs, 77-72

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The SVSU Women's Basketball team continued their winning streak as they took down GLIAC opponent Ferris State in Saturday's contest at O'Neill Arena. As the Cardinals trailed 36-33 heading into the half, SVSU bounced back and posted 44 points in the second half to take the 77-72 victory over the Bulldogs. 

The first quarter went in Ferris States favor, with the Bulldogs outscoring the Cardinals 18-12 in the opening minutes of play. Ferris State earned its largest lead of the night (8) at the 1:36' mark. Abby Duffy led the Cardinals, scoring half their points (6) to end the quarter. 

Duffy opened up the second quarter posting the first four Cardinal buckets to head to a three-point deficit (22-19) behind the Bulldogs. Kierra Crockett's jump shot put Saginaw Valley State only one point away from tying the contest, with FSU leading 24-23 with 4:42 to go in the half.

The Cardinals remained behind and headed into the locker room down by three, 36-33, at the half. 

Laurel Jacqmain took care of the Cardinals, posting seven of her 10 points in the third quarter. Jacqmain's bucket gave the Cardinals their first lead of the night (42-40) at the 6:49 mark. Saginaw Valley State would keep the lead until Ferris State posted a triple to regain the lead at 4:51. Kaitlyn Geers used her layup at at the 2:30' to take back the lead for the second time of the night (53-52). 

The Bulldogs would eventually pull ahead and go into the final 10 minutes of action leading the Cardinals, 61-57.

Jacqumain opened up the final quarter with a triple, putting SVSU within one (61-60) with 8:20 left in the contest. The final tie of the matchup came with a Bulldog bucket at the 3:21 mark (71-71), but FSU would not regain the lead for the remainder of the game.

SVSU earned their second win of the season, taking down the Bulldogs, 77-72, in O'Neill Arena.

Inside the Box Score

  • Duffy posted her career-high of 21 points in tonight's victory, earning her the "Meijer Player of the Game" honors. She added six rebounds, one steal and an assist as well. 
  • Jacqmain had her first career double-double with 13 points and her career-high of 10 rebounds.
  • Hannah Settingsgaard led in steals for the Cardinals with four. She had a season-high six rebounds and added seven points as well. 
  • Crockett and Geers posted eight points each off the bench, both career-highs.
  • Geers led the team and earned her career-high in blocks with three. 
  • The Cardinals won the points in the paint category as well, posting a 44-40 advantage.
  • Saginaw Valley had a 40-35 edge in boards.

The Cardinals return to action a week from today on Saturday (Dec. 16) afternoon at Northwood University. The Timberwolves are coming off a 78-61 win over Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. in Riepma Arena.
