UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Saginaw Valley State Women's Basketball team earned its first victory of the 2017-18 season Thursday (Dec. 7) night over Lake Superior State in the GLIAC home opener. After the score was tied 44-44 at the conclusion of the third, the Cardinals went on a 14 point run and used that to take the victory, 64-52.
The Cardinals' Abby Duffy grabbed the first basket of the night against the Lakers to open up the home conference match in O'Neill Arena. Lake Superior State scored the next nine points before allowing a three pointer from Hannah Settingsgaard to make the deficit 9-5. By the first media timeout at 4:38, Cardinals trailed by 10 (15-5) after two triples from the Lakers.
Coming out of the timeout, Laurel Jacqmain earned two after a great pass from Rozhane Wells. The shot was followed by Settingsgaard who posted the first steal of the night and charged down the court for a layup. The Cardinals went on a seven point run before it was stopped by an SVSU foul that put LSSU at the line to make the score ___
Simone Comer then added a great shot, assisted by Wells, to end the quarter trailing only by one at 20-19.
With a bucket by Abby Duffy from Comer to start the second, Saginaw Valley took its second lead of the night at 21-20. The Cardinals then continued and led by a 26-22 margin at the 4:04 mark. That was their largest lead of the half. The Cardinals led 28-27 heading into the half.
Duffy came out hot in the third, giving SVSU a three point lead within the first minute of action (30-27). At the forced timeout for Saginaw Valley at the 7:55 mark, the Cardinals and Lakers were knotted up, 32-32.
Two makes from the charity stripe from Francesca Coury gave the Cardinals the lead back at 34-32 with 6:46 remaining in the third.
Lake Superior responded and regained its largest lead of the night of six (44-38) at the 2:25 mark.
Saginaw Valley worked hard for the remainder of the third to knot up the score at 44-44 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Cardinals opened up the fourth with a 14-0 run against the Lakers to take the lead (52-44) with 6:55 to go in the game.
Even with a back and fourth final five minutes, the Cardinals remained in control and never let the Lakers within five points. With 39 seconds to go, a Jacqmain free throw gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the night at 64-52. That would prove to be the final score, with Saginaw Valley notching their first victory of the season in the GLIAC home opener.

- Jacqmain posted a career-high night in two categories with 16 points and eight boards, earning herself the "Meijer" player of the game. She added two assists, as well.
- Duffy added 16 points, seven rebounds and one block.
- Settingsgaard went 7-for-11 in free throws and posted 12 points.
- Hall posted the team-high of six assists and had eight rebounds.
- Rozhane Wells notched her career-high of four rebounds and four assists.
- The home squad won the points in the paint category as well, posting a 26-20 advantage.
- Duffy and Settingsgaard both had three steals on the night.
- Kaitlyn Geers added seven points off the bench for the Cardinals.
- SVSU earned 15 points off of the 14 LSSU turnovers.
- Saginaw Valley had a 45-34 edge in boards.

The Cardinals will remain at home for another GLIAC matchup against Ferris State on Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon. The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Northwood University on Thursday, 80-76. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. in O'Neill Arena.
