Women's Baskeball opens GLIAC Play in the U.P. this weekend

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Saginaw Valley State Women's Basketball team is set to open GLIAC conference play this weekend at Michigan Tech University and Northern Michigan University. The Cardinals will face the Huskies and Wildcats for the first time up north in a November / Early December trip.

- Michigan Tech defeated the Cardinals last season in an 82-57 contest, play at MTU. Earlier in the 2016-17 season, SVSU had defeated the Huskies 79-67 at home. The Cardinals have not taken a game from the Huskies at their place since Dec. 9, 2006 when SVSU posted a 68-54 win. Michigan Tech holds the all-time record at 49-33. The #18 Huskies are currently 6-1 overall and first in the North Division and second overall in the GLIAC behind #1 Ashland. MTU is coming off a win over Concordia St. Paul, 83-76, Saturday (Nov. 25) afternoon.

- Saginaw Valley State took down the Wildcats in the GLIAC tournament quarterfinals last season, 62-45, at home. The Cardinals trail NMU 45-27 in alll-time series, but lead 6-4 in the past 10 games played against the Wildcats. Northern Michigan dropped a regional contest against Southern Indiana, 59-49. The Wildcasts are currently 4-3 overall, seventh in the GLIAC and fourth in the North Division.

Saginaw Valley went 0-2 this past week, falling to both Ohio Dominican, 77-56, and Glenville State, 82-62, at ODU's Alumni Hall.

Ohio Dominican 77, SVSU 56 - Nov. 21, 2017 - Boxscore

With the Panthers outscoring the Cardinals 39-23 at the half, SVSU could not bounce back as they fell to ODU,77-56. Abby Duffy posted her season-high of 14 points and added six rebounds, a steal and one assist. Laurel Jacqmain scored her career-high during the loss with 13 points and tallied five rebounds and two assists. Anna Hall led the team with nine rebounds, adding four assists and three steals. She score six points as well. Kaitlyn Geers grabbed seven points and four rebounds off the bench for the Cardinals.

Glenville State 82, SVSU 62 - Nov. 22, 2017 - Boxscore

Despite the best offensive scoring output in an opening quarter for the season, the Cardinal Women's Basketball team could not hang on in a non-conference meeting with Glenville State Wednesday (Nov.22) afternoon at Ohio Dominican's Alumni Hall. SVSU had three players in double-digits scoring, with Abby Duffy and Anna Hall posting the first double-doubles of the year for the Cardinals. Hannah Settingsgaard added 15 points to help lead offensively. Duffy and Hall both posted their first double-double of the 2017-18 season. Duffy's 18 points were a team-high and her 14 boards mark a new career-high. Hall added 11 points and 10 rebounds for her double-double. Kaitlyn Geers and Hall each had a team-high of four assists. Katie Schultz added in a team-high of two steals. She recorded four points and four rebounds as well.
