UNIVERSITY CENTER — Despite a strong second half with a comeback that saw the SVSU Women's Basketball team grab a lead, the Cardinals fell at home to regional foe Ursuline College by a score of 80-71 at O'Neill Arena.
With a back and fourth battle to start out the contest, Ursuline pulled ahead after being knotted up 5-5 with SVSU and would lead for the remainder of the first quarter. The Arrows outscored the Cardinals by a 19-10 margin in the first 10 minutes of action.
The Cardinals had a big second quarter, scoring 22 points to Ursuline's 18. Hannah Settingsgaard was at it again, scoring eight of her team-high 20 in the second. Anna Hall followed up with six points in the frame.
SVSU posted a 22-19 edge in rebounds heading into the locker room despite trailing by a 37-32 count.
Saginaw Valley State came out slow at the start of the third quarter, with Ursuline going on an 8-2 run heading into the first timeout. With five minutes to go, the Cardinals trailed by 11 points. After a steal from Kierra Crockett and a layup, the team cut to its closest deficit since coming out of the locker room at 49-43.
Ursline responded quickly, scoring eight points to the Cardinals' one in the next two minutes of action. The Arrows led the Cardinals by as much as 14 in the remaining minutes and led heading into the final quarter, 59-49.
As the ending of the contest approached, the Cardinals heated up and went on a 7-0 run to start the quarter. The Cardinals battled back to take the lead with "Meijer Player of the Game" Abby Duffy's layup, 62-61 with 6:10 to go in the contest.
The Arrows took back the lead immediately, however, and SVSU could not get back into the lead and ended up falling by the 80-71 final score.
SVSU finished the afternoon having three players with double-digit point outputs.
Inside the Box Score:
- Duffy posted a solid all-round effort, netting 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. She was named the "Meijer Player of the Game."
- Settingsgaard added her team-high of 20 points and added three steals. It marks her second straight 20-plus point performance.
- With an impressive second half effort by Laurel Jacqmain, she rounded-out the top three Cardinal scoring leaders with 12. She added four rebounds and two assists.
- Hall led the Cardinal defense by grabbing up eight rebounds. She also had a season-high four assists.
- Simone Comer, Kaitlyn Geers and Kierra Crockett came off the bench hot for SVSU, posting six, five and five rebounds, respectively.
- The Arrows shot 82.6 % from the charity stripe while the Cardinals were just 58.3%.
- Saginaw Valley posted a 40-24 advantage scoring inside the paint.
- SVSU had 19 offensive boards for 16 second chance points.
- The Cardinals earned 22 points off of the 19 forced turnovers.
- The teams each had 26 field goals and 44 rebounds.
Up Next...
The team will head on the road at the beginning of next week to round-out the its early non-conference slate with at Ohio Dominican on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Cards then play Glenville State Wednesday in a 1:00 p.m. game at ODU.
