University Center, Mich. - The SVSU women's basketball team hosted GLIAC North Division opponent Lake Superior State University on Thursday (Jan. 14) evening at SVSU's O'Neill Arena. The Lady Cardinals took the early lead and only allowed four first quarter points, leading wire-to-wire for a 17-point victory, 62-45.

After Emily Wendling scored an early bucket to give SVSU a 2-0 lead, she added another jumper at the 6:15 mark to give the home team its first double-digits edge at 12-2. 

Leading 12-4, the Lady Cards scored seven in a row, capped-off by a Hannah Settingsgaard three-pointer with just two seconds left to make the lead 15 points (19-4) as the first quarter concluded.

Saginaw Valley took their lead up to 17 points at the start of the second period after a jumpshot from Halee Nieman brought the score to 21-4.

The Lakers were able to get some points on the board in the second half and April Lacross cut the lead to its slimmest margin for the rest of the game at nine points (27-18) after back-to-back triples at the 1:33 minute mark.

Danielle Carriere made good on a layup with just over a minute remaining to make the score 29-18, which is what the scoreboard would show as both teams hit the halftime break.

The Cardinals came back from halftime with momentum, as Katelyn Carriere made a jumper, followed by a three before the nine minute mark for a 16-point SVSU lead at 34-18.

SVSU pushed the lead out to as many as 19 points in the contest, coming when Wendling nailed a jumper with 46 ticks left on the clock to make the score 62-43. 

LSSU's Mackenzie Edwards answered with a pair of free throws to make the score 62-45 and that's where the score would stand as time expired for the contest.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Wendling posted a game-high 20 points, going 7-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. Wendling grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds as well, blocking two shots while adding an assist and a steal.
  • Katelyn Carriere kicked-in 15 points for the Cardinals on 5-of-9 shooting. She added three steals, two boards and a pair of assists as well.
  • Danielle Carriere netted eight points and eight rebounds for SV, adding a career-best two blocked shots.
  • Alex Green posted six points and five boards..
  • SVSU shot 41.4% (24-58) from the floor compared to Lake Superior's 33.3% (15-45). 
  • The Cards went a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line, marking the second game in the past four that Saginaw Valley did not miss from the charity stripe. SV was 19-of-19 January 3 against Walsh.
  • The Cardinals had a 38-24 advantage in rebounds over the Lakers and posted a 30-18 edge in points in the paint.
  • LSSU barely edged-out the Cards, 17-15 in bench points. 
  • The win was the sixth straight for SVSU, matching the 2013-14 squad that rattled-off six victories in a row. 
  • The 10-4 start to the season is the best since the 2003-04 season, which featured a 12-3 opening to the season.
  • Tamara Novic led Lake Superior with 17 points, going 7-of-11 from the floor.

Meijer "Player of the Game"

Wendling was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after her 20-point, 12-rebound performance. It marks her eighth double-double of the season through just 14 games.

The Cardinals make the short trip to face the Northwood University Timberwolves on Saturday (Jan. 14) at 4:00 p.m. NU is coming off a 75-67 victory at Hillsdale on Thursday. The game will be played in Northwood's Riepma Arena, inside the Bennet Sports Center.
