SVSU Women's Basketball 'Get to Know': Katelyn Carriere

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – This month's Women's Basketball "Get to Know" spotlight is sophomore guard, Katelyn Carriere. Katelyn is having a great 2013-14 campaign starting at point guard in all 19 of SVSU's games thus far this season. She is averaging 14.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest. She is also currently ranked 9th in the GLIAC in 3pt FG percentage, 5th in FT percentage and 14th in assists per game.

Below are a few comments from Head Coach, Jamie Pewinski, about Katelyn Carriere:

"Katelyn is having an unbelievable season so far. She really has made some huge plays for us both offensively and defensively in a lot of close games. We ask a lot of KC – often times she is guarding the best player on the opposing team, we need her to score, take care of the ball and still play 30-35 minutes. Overall, I think that she has handled it very well and is only starting to scratch the surface of her potential.

Not only is Katelyn a huge contributor for our team on the floor, she is a driving influence for a lot her teammates off it as well. She works extremely hard in the classroom and has maintained a very high GPA. She is present in the SVSU community and really makes an effort to represent our Women's Basketball program with class. I'm so proud of how far she has come in just a short period of time and I am so excited because the future is very bright for her."

Below are some of Katelyn's thoughts about SVSU, her Cardinal teammates & a glimpse into what matters most outside of basketball:

SVSU is definitely a perfect fit for me. I realized it the moment I stepped on campus that this is where I would be attending school for the next 4 years. The people and the campus made me feel so comfortable. My team means everything to me. Everything I do, on or off the court, reflects my teammates and no matter what, I know that they will always be there for me giving me 100%. I think the one thing that matters most outside of basketball is family. My family has made me who I am today and there is no way I could have done anything without them.

Why did you come to SVSU?

Coming to SVSU has given me the opportunity to play great basketball somewhere close to home and campus makes me feel right at home.

What is the best part of campus?

Training room or the FOC (cafeteria on campus)!

What is a random fact that most people might not know about you?

I have a fake tooth.

What is your favorite movie?

The Lion King or any of the Transformers movies!

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

I would probably have to say my oldest sister Nicole. She has a strong faith in God, is always there to help her family, she puts everyone before herself and her work ethic is incredible.

What is your favorite music group right now?

I don't really have one currently, but I loved the Backstreet Boys when I was younger!

Favorite food?

Cookies!

Who is the best singer on the team?

Mikayla has a great voice for country songs…but that's about it.

What is your career ambition?

I am not sure what I want to do exactly...but I hope to deal with athletes in some way and stay involved with sports.
