Saginaw Valley Falls to Michigan Tech, 72-46

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley women's basketball team fell at home against Michigan Technological University today (Feb. 16) by a 72-46 margin.

SVSU (11-12,9-10 GLIAC) jumped on the scoreboard with a layup by Emily Wendling (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing HS) less than a minute into the game. Michigan Tech (16-7,14-5 GLIAC) responded with a 10-2 run before a Briana Graham (Detroit, Mich. / Detroit Martin Luther King HS) layup cut the Cardinal deficit to 12-6 with 13:19 left in the opening half.

Saginaw Valley continued to shoot cold from the field over the next ten minutes, allowing the Huskies to go on a 20-5 run and open a 32-11 lead.

SVSU answered with a 6-0 run, capped by a Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North HS) jump shot, to cut the Cardinal defict to 32-17 with 2:42 remaining in the half.

Saginaw Valley would not get another bucket in the half and went into the locker room trailing 36-17.

For the half, Saginaw Valley was held to just 23 percent (7-of-31) shooting from the floor while allowing 52 percent (15-29).

After falling behind 41-17 to start the second half, Saginaw Valley went on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 43-25 after four minutes of play.

A pair of free throws by Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich. / Goodrich HS) kept the Cardinal defict at 20 (53-33) with 10:16 to play in the game.

The Lady Cardinals struggled to find the bottom of the net and fell behind 70-40 with just over three minutes to play.

Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich. / Brown City HS) scored the final bucket of the contest as the game ended in a 72-46 Cardinal loss.

Saginaw Valley was led by Meijer 'Player of the Game' Emily Wendling, who notched her ninth double-double of the season with team-high 13 points and 10 rebounds. Zirzow also had a strong showing with nine points and seven boards.

The Saginaw Valley women's basketball team will return to the hardwood Thursday (Feb. 21) for an 8:00PM Senior Night contest against Grand Valley State.
