UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team

The Storm led for most of the first half and led by six at the 17:13 mark before a pair of free throws by sophomore Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) cut the Lake Erie lead to 10-6.  SVSU claimed the lead at 15-14 after a three-pointer by sophomore Jasmine Woods (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) with 12:08 remaining in the half.  Lake Erie would build an eleven point lead with the score 32-21 after a triple by Katelyn Prince at the 3:38 mark.  SVSU would take a two point lead with 35 seconds left in the frame after sophomore Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich.) made good on a layup.  The Storm would score the last four points of the half to bring a two point lead into the locker room, 38-36.

Freshman Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) paced the Lady Cardinals in the first half with nine points, hitting on 3-of-5 three-point attempts.  Kennedy added seven points while Woods had five.

The Cardinals knotted the score at 38 at the 18:45 mark in the second and would extend the lead to three points three different times, the third being with 13:17 remaining in the half when SVSU led 47-44.  SVSU maintained the lead until the game was tied for the 10th time at 58 points-apiece at the 5:04 mark.  Lake Erie grabbed a 61-60  lead with 3:04 remaining in the contest and a 65-64 advantage with 41 seconds left.  Four clutch free throws and a huge steal from senior Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) sealed the deal for the Cardinals, as Lake Erie wasn't able to get-off a last second three point attempt.

Wesp earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors after scoring nine points while adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Greene had 12 points and four rebounds in the contest.  Cheritee Green had nine points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.  Kennedy also had nine points in the victory.

The victory improves the Cardinals to 5-11 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC while the Storm fall to 2-13 overall and 1-8 in league play.  SVSU is back in action on Thursday (1/27) at Tiffin and Ohio Dominican on Saturday (1/29).  Tip-off for the Tiffin match-up is set for 8:00 pm while the Ohio Dominican contest is set for a 3:00 pm tip.
