Women's Basketball Defeats Virginia Union, 73-65

RICHMOND, Va. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team was victorious at Virginia Union University on Monday (Nov. 29).  The Cardinals defeated the Panthers by a score of 73-65 to improve to 2-3 overall on the season.  The Panthers fall to 0-4 with the loss.  

The Cardinals found themselves trailing by a score of 39-28 at halftime.  Sophomore Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich./CMU) notched 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of play to lead SVSU offensively.  Freshman Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting in the opening frame, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three point line.  Sophomore Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) added six rebounds and three blocks to help anchor the Cardinal defense in the first half.

SVSU would bounce-back to outscore the Panthers by a 45-26 count in the second half to close-out with the 73-65 victory.  Herzog, who earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors, racked up a double-double for the Cardinals, finishing with 11 points while posting game-highs with 13 rebounds and six blocks.  Kristen Greene would add another nine points in the second frame to finish with a team and career-high 18 points in the contest.  Cheritee Green finished with 17 points and five rebounds.  Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) also reached double figures in scoring, netting 10 points and adding seven rebounds and eight assists.

The Cardinals return home to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play, as they host the Lake Superior State University Lakers at O'Neill Arena in an 8:00 pm contest.  The two teams split last year's series, with each school's victory coming on its home court.
