Cardinals Fall to Greyhounds, 74-64

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Indianapolis today (Nov. 17), 74-64 in their first road game of the season.

The Cardinals got a slow start against the Greyhounds going down as many as 15 before cutting the lead to only five on a three pointer by junior Marah Kyle (Bluffton, Ind./Bluffton HS). Saginaw Valley was led by sophomore Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) who had eight points and pulled down three rebounds, while senior Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) added five points and two rebounds. The Cardinals were five-for-six from behind the line for a 83.3 free throw percentage.

Saginaw Valley came within four points of Indianapolis but that would be the closest they would come to taking back the lead in the entire second half of play. The Cardinals were led by senior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) who had eight points and six rebounds, while freshman Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich./Brown City HS) added six points. Meijer "Player of the Game" Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had five points and five blocked shots for Saginaw Valley in the second half.

Wesp would lead the way for the Cardinals scoring ten points, while Kennedy ended the night with nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich./Wyoming Park HS) tacked on seven points and seven rebounds, while Herzog ended the night with nine points and and a school record eight blocked shots.

With the loss Saginaw Valley falls to 1-1 overall on the season, while Indianapolis improves to 1-0 overall on the season. The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday (Nov. 26) when they travel to Virginia for the Virginia State Tournament. Tip off against Virginia State is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
