Cardinals Defeat Lewis, 75-70

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley women's basketball team defeated Lewis University in their first regular season game, 75-70 tonight (Nov. 12).

The Cardinals started the game off strong taking the lead right away when sophomore Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) scored off a jumper. Saginaw Valley would go up as many as 11 in the first half of play. Sophomore Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) led the way for for the Cardinals in the first half of play with eight points and two rebounds, while Meijer "Player of the Game" Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich./Wyoming Park HS) added six points and seven rebounds.

Saginaw Valley went down as many as seven before taking the final lead of the game at the 1:36 mark in the second half of play when junior Marah Kyle (Bluffton, Ind./Bluffton HS) made a layup putting the Cardinals up 67-65. Senior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) had 12 points for Saginaw Valley, while Kyle added five points and two assists.

Greene led the way for Saginaw Valley with 15 points and 18 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while Burkhardt added 17 points and six rebounds, and Kennedy tacked on 16 points. Sophomore Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) added nine points and nine rebounds with four blocked shots on the night.

With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 1-0 overall on the season, and Lewis falls to 0-1 overall on the season. The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday (Nov. 17) when they travel to Indianapolis. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
