HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley
State University women’s basketball team ended their
2009-2010 season with a loss as they traveled to Houghton to take
on Michigan Tech University. The Cardinals fell by a score of
85-73.
The first half of action was a back-and-forth battle as the lead
fluctuated between the Cardinals and Huskies six times before the
end of the half as Michigan Tech held a three point advantage over
SVSU, 39-36. The Cardinals were led by freshman Aysha Boston (Detroit,
Mich. / Renaissance HS) who scored ten of her 16 total points while
freshman Grace
Herzog (Linden, Mich. / Powers Catholic HS) grabbed five
rebounds in the first half of play.
The Huskies held the lead throughout the entirety of the second
half of action. The Cardinals would bring the score within one on a
Herzog layup in the opening minute of the half. With under four
minutes remaining in the contest, Saginaw Valley went on a
five-point run sparked by Herzog who topped off a traditional
“and-one” layup and good free-throw just seconds before
junior Kelley
Wesp (Cincinnati Ohio / Glen Este HS) connected on a lay-up to
bring the score within five, 75-70. The Cardinals unfortunately
were unable to re-gain the lead as the Huskies went on to victory,
85-73.
Herzog led the way for the Cardinals, ending the night with 16
points and 11 rebounds. From the line, she connected on 10-of-11
free-throws and also added three blocked shots on the afternoon.
Boston also contributed 16 points and finished with three assists
and three steals while junior Brittany
Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS)
tapped in 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Cardinals end the 2009-2010 season with an overall record of
7-20 and went 5-17 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.
