Cardinals Have Good Showing at Elaine Leigh Invite

ROCHESTER, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field team had a good showing at the Elaine Leigh Invite hosted by Oakland University on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

The women's team won four events while achieving 16 top-ten finishes, with 13 of those being top-five marks along with one NCAA DII Provisional mark and eight personal records. On the men's side, four events were won with 36 top-ten, 22 top-five placings, and 17 PRs.

Alona Olshevska won the 200m finals with a time of 25.09 seconds. Angelina Delbosque was also a winner in the 100m after crossing the finish line in 12.58 seconds. Cheyenne Nesbitt had the top time in the 100 hurdle preliminaries with 13.70. This mark is a D2 provisional time. Nesbitt also finished in second in the long jump after a best leap of 5.31m. Olshevska, Delbosque, and Nesbitt joined Sophia Thelen on the winning 4x100 relay team that won with a time of 46.80.

Quin Broussard, Wynter Burnett, and Nate Niederquell were winners for the men over the weekend. Broussard won the 100 with a time of 10.95. Burnett topped the triple jump with a PR of 12.06m. He also had a top-10 mark in the 200 with another PR of 23.88 that placed him seventh. Niederquell won the 400 hurdles after clocking a 57.59. Dan Barger, Carson Irwin, Matt Gazzarato, and Rodney Zimmerman won the 4x100 Relay with a time of 43.99.

Thelen had two top-five finishes as an individual. Her runner-up finish came in the 200 with a time of 25.87; she placed fourth in the 100 after a finish of 13.03. Alicia Fields finished second in the 100 after setting a PR in the race with a time of 12.68. Fields was also the anchor on the 4x100 relay team of Autumn Morris, Taylor Moyer, and MaKayla Williams who finished in 49.92.

Jacob Walker was the runner-up in the 5K after he set a new PR with his time of 14:40.28. Clarence Corbett also achieved second play with his throw in the shot put of 16.08m.

Trinity Greer was the lone women's sprinter to claim third with a 26.14-second finish in the 200. Dan Barger earned third in the 100 with a PR of 11.17. Braylon Silvas claimed third in the long jump after his best jump of 6.14m.

Cassie Campbell was joined by eight men's athletes with fourth-place finishes at the meet. Campbell finished the 100 hurdles in 15.02 for her placing. Carson Irwin was fourth in the 100 after timing in at 11.21. Irwin also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 23.37. Ryan Brenner finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 50.72. Brenner was sixth in the long jump after his best mark was 5.64m. Bryce Husen placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 1:54.96. Adam Thomas set a PR in the 5K of 14:44.94 for his fourth-place finish. Johnathan Buck finished fourth in the 10K with his pace of 33:46.12. Alex Stoll finished the 110 hurdles in 15.72 for fourth. Tyler Hufnagel had the same finish in the 400 hurdles with a PR of 1:00.14. Lukas Ray earned fourth in both the shot put (14.25m) and discus (43.66m). His throw in the discus was a PR in the event.

Mallory Farmer was fifth in the 400 with her time of 1:02.05. Farmer also placed eighth in the 200 with her time of 27.60. Makayla Fuerst was fifth in the 400 hurdles after a time of 1:07.17. Tyler Burrell placed fifth in the 400 with a time of 51.64. Burrell made the top ten in the 200 with his time of 23.95. Cameron Sherrill set a PR in the 800 of 1:55.08 to earn fifth in the race. Matt Gazzarato was fifth in the 100 with a PR of 11.25. Daniel Yarrington finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 13.58m. He was sixth in the discus with a toss of 36.57m. Kyle Gulliver was the final top-five finisher for the Cardinals with his throw of 39.58m in the discus.
