Cardinal Track and Field Finished Busy Weekend in California

The Saginaw Valley State University track and field team had a busy weekend with three meets in three cities over four days. The first group of Cardinals competed at the Cal State LA Twilight meet held in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday and Thursday evening (April 10-11) before the largest group of participants competed in the three-day meet at Azusa Pacific (AP) for the Bryan Clay Invitational that took place Thursday through Saturday (April 11-13). The Cardinals also sent one female and five male student-athletes to Central Michigan to compete in the Chippewa Challenge on Saturday, April 13.

Cheyenne Nesbitt had a good showing at Azusa Pacific as she finished second in the Heptathlon Group A with a final score of 5,816. That mark is an NCAA Division II provisional standard. She set a new personal record in the javelin during the multis with a heave of 35.12m. Nesbitt led group A through the first part of the competition. She won the high jump and finished top five in six of the seven events.

Cassandra Campbell finished third in the 100 hurdles at the Cal State LA Twilight meet with a finish of 14.33 seconds. Campbell ran the event again at the Bryan Clay Invitational where she finished in 14.44. Her best finish of the weekend came in the 400 hurdles when she reached an NCAA DII Provisional time of 1:02.16.

The women's 4x100 relay of Sophia Thelen, Alona Olshevska, Angelina Delbosque, and Chaniya Madison ran the race at both California events. For the LA Twilight, they finished third with a time of 46.67. They followed that up with a finish of 46.61 at the AP meet. Both of those times were NCAA DII provisional marks.

Thelen set a PR as an individual competitor with her time of 12.40 in the 100m at the LA Twilight meet.

Olshevska ran the 400 at Azusa Pacific and placed 12th with her NCAA DII provisional time of 54.49.

Delbosque ran the 100m and 200m as an individual over the weekend. She finished 12th in the 100 in LA with a time of 12.35. She finished the same event in Azusa in 12.42 seconds. For the 200, Delbosque finished in 25.22 to place in the top 100 of competitors at the large meet.

Madison ran the 100 at both California meets. The LA Twilight saw her set a PR in the race with a time of 12.51. She finished the run in 12.59 to end the weekend.

Ericka Jackson finished third in the shot put at the LA Twilight with a throw of 12.74m. She also finished eighth in the discus with her best mark of 36.97m. Jackson moved over to the Bryan Clay Invitational and threw in the shot put and javelin, finishing those events with throws of 12.44m in the shot and 37.52m in the javelin.

Grace Collett placed sixth in the 100 hurdles in LA with a time of 14.93. She would run the event in Azusa as well and finish in 15.08.

Alexa Keiser reached NCAA provisional times in both the 5K and 3000m steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Her time of 16:41.97 in heat two of the 5K Open A was a PR. While her time of 10:45.52 in the steeplechase open placed her 36th in the race.

Ciera Weber competed in the pole vault B in Asuza and placed 12th after clearing the bar at 3.42m.

Jenna Picard earned a PR and finished in the top 25 in the 1500 Open C with her time of 4:40.56. She also ran in the 800 Open and recorded a time of 2:18.08.

Karissa Picard ran in the 1500m Open B and finished with a time of 4:42.19. She also competed in the 800 Open and clocked a 2:17.49 finish.

Lynsey Amthor ran in the 10K Open at Asuza Pacific and had a time of 36:46.81.

Abby Karst was the lone Cardinal women's athlete to compete in Mount Pleasant at the Chippewa Challenge on Saturday. She placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 11.65m. She was also fifth in the javelin after throwing a PR distance of 24.12m. Karst set a second PR in the discus with a toss of 31.23m to place 11th in the event.

On the men's side of things, Corey Bowers won the 1500m race at the LA Twilight with a time of 3:59.27. Bowers ran the event a second time for the weekend at Azusa Pacific and placed ninth in the 1500m Open C after a time of 3:55.50.

Andrew Quinn won the shot put at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a throw of 16.45m. He placed 14th in the hammer throw at the same meet with a PR toss of 48.48m. Quinn competed at the LA Twilight meet as well, finishing third in the discus with a best throw of 42.39m and fourth in the shot put with a mark of 16.20m.

Nolan Berg was second in the discus in LA with a throw of 43.40m. He placed fifth in the shot put at the same meet after achieving a mark of 14.82m. In Azusa, Berg finished in the top 20 in the shot put where he threw for 14.35m, and the discus with a mark of 44.48m.

Ryan Brenner performed well at Azusa Pacific in the decathlon group C with a third-place total of 7,058 in the event. That finish is an NCAA provisional mark. Brenner set PRs in the pole vault (4.30m), javelin (57.24m), and 1500 (4:50.92) while finishing in the top five for six of the eight events.

Graham Jones threw the javelin in both California stops. In LA, he placed fourth at 41.23m. At the Bryan Clay, he placed in the top 30 with his mark of 45.80m.

Tyler Burrell placed sixth in the 800m in LA with a time of 2:05.26. He ran the 400 in Azusa where he finished in the top 100 with a time of 50.39.

Quin Broussard set a new PR in the 400m at the LA Twilight with a time of 51.10 to place seventh in the race. Broussard also had two top-100 finishes at Azusa with a time of 22.24 in the 200 and 11.06 in the 100.

Jack Lobodzinski raced in the 5K Open C at Azusa where he placed 11th and set a new PR with the time of 14:30.68. He also raced in the 1500m Open C at the meet and clocked a time of 4:01.83.

Noah Verlinde raced in the 5K Open C and placed 15th with a PR of 14:31.91.

Dominic Suliman was 16th in the 1500m Open A with an NCAA provisional time of 3:46.67. That finish was a PR for him at that event. Suliman finished his weekend with a second provisional time in the 800 with a top-60 time of 1:50.27.

Thomas Hufton and Carson Hersch raced in the 10K Open at Azusa Pacific. Hufton completed the race in 30:26.90 to place 23rd while Hersch finished 33rd with a time of 30:43.13.

Carson Irwin set a PR in the 100 at the Chippewa Challenge in Mount Pleasant when he finished in 11.19 seconds to place second in the race. Irwin also ran the 200 and finished in second place again with a time of 23.73.

Lukas Ray set two PRs in the three events he competed in at CMU. His best finish was third in the shot put where he threw for 14.25m. He placed fifth in the discus with a PR of 40.34m and sixth in the hammer with a PR heave of 35.53m.

Kadyn Warner was fourth in the shot put at CMU with a mark of 13.33m. Kyle Gulliver had a fourth-place finish in the discus with a PR of 41.04m.

Daniel Yarrington was the final men's competitor in Mount Pleasant. He placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 12.90m. Yarrington set a PR in the hammer (34.61m) and the discus (37.02m) to place fifth and seventh in those events respectively.

The SVSU track and field team is scheduled to return to Michigan and compete at Oakland University next weekend on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20.
