Two School Records Broken on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Two Saginaw Valley State University indoor track and field records were broken on Friday during the SVSU Tune-Up Meet. The first was set by junior Dominic Suliman who finished the mile run in four minutes and 2.38 seconds to break the previous record by over six seconds. The second record came in the women's 4x400 relay when the team of Trinity Greer, Cassandra Campbell, Sophia Thelen, and Alona Olshevska won the race and improved upon the former record by over three seconds with a time of 3:44.06.

Along with the two records, there were a multitude of personal best times along with four women's victories, including the 4x400, and two on the men's side.

Grace Collett won the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.80. Ciera Weber led the pole vault after clearing the bar at 3.61m for the second win for the Cardinal women. Chaniya Madison claimed first prize in the 60m after a personal best time of 7.75 in the event.

Mallory Farmer earned a PR in the 400m with her second-place mark of 1:00.82. Makayla Fuerst finished just back from Farmer to claim third in the race with a time of 1:01.76.

Hanna Schroeder finished third during the 60 hurdles after her time of 9.06. Ericka Jackson was third in the shot put after a best throw of 12.05m.

Abby Karst tossed the shot put 11.67m to finish the event in fourth. Grace Harkenrider also claimed fourth place after hitting a new PR in the 800m when she crossed the finish line at 2:18.22.

Olivia Carpenter and Sophia Thelen were the final two top-five finishers on the women's side. Carpenter finished the 60 hurdles final in 9.41 to earn her spot in the final results. She did make her PR in the preliminary race with a time of  9.23. Thelen also set a PR for her fifth-place finish in the 60m with her time of 7.84.

Tyler Burrell was one of the men's winners with his time of 1:24.84 in the 600m. Bryce Husen was the other after he won the 800m with a PR of 1:54.09 in the race.

Cameron Sherrill recorded a new PR in the 800m with a mark of 1:55.63 which earned him second place. Nate Niederquell was the runner-up in the 600m with a personal-best time of 1:26.18. Rodney Zimmerman collected a PR in the 400m after placing second with a time of 51.12. The men's 4x400 relay team consisting of Ryan Brenner, Quin Broussard, Wynter Burnett, and Tyler Burrell ended the evening with a second-place time of 3:22.61. Tommy Hufton had a season-best result in the 5000m with his time of 14:40.33 which earned him second-place in the results. Christian Purchase-Ofoeme was another second-place performer after clearing the bar at 1.88m in the high jump. Deven Varela got over the bar in the pole vault at 4.30m for second. Andrew Quinn finished off the runner-up results with a throw of 16.35m in the shot put. Quinn collected another top-five finish in the weight throw with a heave of 15.23m for fifth place.

A trio of Cardinals were third in their races. Adam Thomas set a PR in the 5000m after crossing the finish line in 14:45.57. Ernest Morris also tallied third with his PR in the 60m at 6.99. Alex Stoll grabbed third in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.69.

David Ferguson finished the 800m in fourth with a time of 1:56.65. Dan Barger registered a PR in the 200m after his time of 22.49 gave him fourth. Zach deBeauclair finished fourth in the 3000m with a time of 9:00.03. Nolan Berg napped fourth in the shot put with a best toss of 15.24m. The 4x400 relay squad containing Bryce Husen, Cameron Sherrill, Justin Roose, and David Ferguson finished the race in fourth after a time of 3:26.17.

Lukas Ray placed fifth in the shot put with a PR of 14.89m. Caleb Smith recorded a PR for his fifth-place ranking in the 5000m with a time of 14:55.97. Braylon Silvas completed the top-five finishes for the Cardinals with a jump of 6.08m in the long jump.

The SVSU track & field team will gear up for the GLIAC Indoor Championships next weekend inside the SVSU Fieldhouse. Day one is set to begin on Saturday, February 24. The championship meet will conclude on Sunday, February 25.
