Cardinals Break Three School Records at GVSU Big Meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University competed in the two-day Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University on Friday and Saturday.

Alona Olshevska and Alexa Keiser highlighted the women's results as both set new school records with their race results. Olshevska won the 400m in 54.00, breaking her school record. Meanwhile, Keiser broke the record in the mile run with a time of 4:45.80, beating the previous mark set last season by just under five seconds.

The men's distance medley relay team of Corey Bowers, Tyler Burrell, Shane Siterlet, and Dominic Suliman broke a forty-year-old school record in the event with their time of 9:48.71.

Alexis Tracey placed fourth in the 5000m with a season-best mark of 8:12.80. The 4x400 relay team consisting of Trinity Greer, Alona Olshevska, Cassandra Campbell, and Sophia Thelen was fifth after a finish of 3:47.34. The women's DMR team consisting of Karissa Picard, Trinity Greer, Jenna Picard, and Alexa Keiser was the final top-five finish for the women after finishing the race in 11:44.67.

Ciera Weber earned a top-10 finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.57m.

Nick McArdle won the 5000m run with a personal best time of 14:33.35 for the only Cardinal event win at the meet.

Suliman added to his weekend with a second-place result in the 800m with a time of 1:50.58 (.11 seconds from the school record).

Dakota Dykhuis set a new PR in the 5000m of 14:54.80 to place third in the event. The men's record-setting DMR time was also third in that race.

Trevor Culpepper completed the 60m dash finals in fifth place with a time of 6.82 seconds. His second-place prelim time of 6.81 was a personal best and .01 seconds from tying the SVSU record in the event.

Andrew Quinn set PRs in both the shot put and the weight throw. His shot throw was at 16.99m and was good for sixth in the event while his toss in the weight was 16.55m and placed him 13th. Noah Verlinde and Jacob Walker were seventh in their 5000m races. Verlinde clocked in at 14:41.09 while Walker finished at 14:56.36. Clarence Corbett was eighth in the shot put with a heave of 16.02m. Jack Lobodzinski was the final top-10 result for the men's team with his PR in the 3000m run at 8:12.96.

Both the men's and women's track and field teams will head home for a Tune Up meet on Friday, February 16 at 2:30 p.m., EST, before hosting the GLIAC Indoor Championships the following week on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25.
