Cardinal Track and Field Finishes with Six Wins at SVSU Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track and field teams finished with six wins at the annual SVSU Classic meet on Friday afternoon. The Cardinal women's team had 12 top-five finishes, while three student-athletes set new PRs. On the men's side, 12 top-fives were collected and five PRs were reset.

Grace Collett was one of two winners on the women's team with her time of 8.88 seconds in the 60m hurdles finals. Cheyenne Williamson was the other winner for the women as she leaped 5.83m in the long jump to win the event.

Angelina Delbosque finished second in the 60m with a final time of 7.83. Trinity Greer and Ciera Weber also collected runner-up finishes. Greer's happened in the 300m after crossing the finish line at 41.30; Weber cleared the bar in the pole vault at the 3.68m mark to earn her second-prize result.

Sophia Thelen set a new personal best time in the 60m with her qualifying time of 7.95 in the preliminary race. That time, along with her 7.96 in the final race, was third-best among all competitors. A new PR was set by Ericka Jackson in the shot put as she heaved a throw of 12.68m to claim fourth in the event. Karissa Picard also scooped up fourth in the mile after a time of 5:20.46.

Like Thelen, Olivia Carpenter also set a new PR with her preliminary time in the 60m hurdles event. Carpenter registered the fifth-best time of 9.30 and qualified for the final race. She finished one spot back in sixth with a 9.65. MaKayla Williams was fifth in the 200m (27.01) along with Cassandra Campbell in the 300m (42.04) and Makayla Fuerst in the 400m (1:01.75).

The men had four winners on the day with Tyler Burrell winning the 600m with a time of 1:24.23. Deven Varela won the pole vault with a mark of 4.45m. Varela was .01 from his PR in the event. Clarence Corbett won the shot put with a throw of 16.79m. Corbett also claimed third place in the weight throw with a toss of 15.70m. Dominic Suliman was the final winner for the Cardinal men as he took the 3K with a time of 8:26.33.

Trevor Culpepper had himself a meet as he finished the 60m in second place with a final time of 6.82. Culpepper missed the school record by just .01 seconds. David Ferguson was the runner-up in the 800m with a time of 1:56.58. Jack Lobodzinski also finished second in his event, the 3K. His time of 8:30.53 beat his PR by almost two seconds.

Nolan Berg was third in the shot put with a best throw of 14.81m. Thomas Hufton placed third in the 3K with a finish of 8:33.42.

Noah Verlinde was the only individual to finish fourth with a time of 8:33.72 in the 3K. The men's team claimed six of the top 10 times in the event, including first through fourth place. The 4x400 relay team of Justin Roose, Cameron Sherrill, Tyler Bays, and Bryce Husen claimed fourth after a time of 3:33.91.

Lukas Ray completed the list of top-five finishers with his shot put throw of 14.18m. That mark improved upon Ray's PR by .79m.

The SVSU track and field teams will remain at home for the Annual Doug Hansen Open next Friday, January 19. The meet is scheduled to begin with field events beginning at 2:30 p.m., and track events starting at 4:00 p.m.
