Cardinals open with multi events at GLIAC Outdoor Championships

ALLENDALE -- The SVSU track & field teams traveled to the 2017 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, which are being held at the GVSU Track & Field Stadium in Allendale, Michigan. The opening day was Wednesday (May 3), with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon getting underway.

The Cardinals had two compete in the decathlon, as Sam Black and Joseph Thwing began competition.

After five scored events, Black leads the event with a point total of 3,734. He garnered 840 points with the top finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 6'8.25". In the long jump, he racked-up another 727 with his jump of 21' 9.00". Black added 589 in the shot put (38' 5.5"), 795 in the 100 meter dash (11.30) and 783 in the 400 meter dash (50.70).

Thwing sits in 6th place with his score of 3,188 points. He had the best showing in the shot put, finishing 1st for 690 points with his distance of 43' 10.75". Thwing notched another 731 points in the high jump, using a height of 6' 3.50". He rounded-out his scoring in the long jump (535), 400 meter dash (547) and 100 meter dash (685).

Saginaw Valley continues with the second day at the GLIAC Championships. The decathlon picks back up at 9:00 a.m. before the heptathlon gets going at 9:30 a.m. Field and running events will begin at 2:30 p.m.
