Track & Field Student-Athletes Earn All-Region Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Five Saginaw Valley State University track & field student-athletes earned USTFCCCA All-Region Honors on Wednesday (May 18) for the 2015-16 NCAA Division II outdoor track & field season.  Robert Atwater, Andrew Mudd and Robert Tarpley earned the plaudits from the men's team while Anna Fochesato and Taylor Stepanski represent the women's team.

Atwater earned his top mark in the high jump at the Al Owens Open where he recorded a height of 6'11". At the 2016 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, he was named Outdoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. He ranks sixth nationally and first in the GLIAC.

Mudd posted his season-high score in the Decathlon at the 2016 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, recording a mark of 6,752. He is currently ranked 17th in the nation and first in the GLIAC.

Tarpley earned all-region plaudits in both the long jump and triple jump. He notched his outdoor season-best mark of 23' 7.5" in the long jump at the Hillsdale Last Chance Meet. In the triple jump, he posted his best mark at the 2016 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, with a distance of 48'6". Tarpley ranks 30th nationally and fifth in the GLIAC in the long jump. In the triple jump, he ranks 39th nationally and second in the GLIAC.

For the women's team, Stepanski earned all-region honors in both the 800 meter run and 1,500 meter run. She recently posted personal records in both events, recording a time of 2:07.02 at the Al Owens Open in the 800 meter and 4:23.22 in the 1,500 meters at the 2016 GLIAC Outdoor Championships. Stepanski ranks third nationally in both events, first in the GLIAC in the 800 and third in the GLIAC in the 1,500.

Fochesato recorded her season high mark in the triple jump of 12.15 meters at the GVSU Second to Last Chance Meet. The distance ranks her first in the GLIAC and 26th nationally.

The top five individuals in each event from each region earned the All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the regions' top three relay teams. The regions used for this award match those used during the cross country season.

The 2016 outdoor season concludes on May 26-29, with the NCAA Division II National Championships, hosted in Bradenton, Florida.
