BIG RAPIDS - The SVSU track & field teams competed on day two of the 2016 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, held at Top Taggart Field on the campus of Ferris State University. A GLIAC Championship in the decathlon by Andrew Mudd highlighted several top performances from the Cardinals on the day.
The Cardinal men sit in third place overall with 37 points after seven scored events while the women are in 11th with four points after seven events.
Mudd's title in the decathlon came with a point total of 6,752 points. He finished atop the long jump, 400 meter dash and 110 hurdles in the process. His point total is a provisionally qualifying mark and currently ranks him 12th nationally. Teammate and first year track competitor, Sam Black, finished third in the decathlon with a point total of 6,350. That total is also a provisional qualifying mark. Black also competed in the high jump, posting an outdoor best of 6'6.75" for him.
Robert Atwater notched a pair of provisional qualifying marks. He finished third in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 6'8.75". He then took fourth in the long jump, clearing a distance of 23'11.75". That long jump number was a personal best for him, either indoor or outdoor.
Desmond Baugh qualified for Friday's finale of the 110 Hurdles, finishing with the sixth-best time of 15.34 seconds.
Clyde Anderson posted a seventh place showing in his second 10,000 meter run. He bested his prior time by 35 seconds with a mark of 31.20.19. Thomas Kean had a personal best time in the same event, crossing the finish line with a time of 32:27.42.
On the women's side, a pair of 800 meter run participants qualified for Friday's final. DeAnna Stickler-Gatson had the third best time of 2:14.62, with teammate Paige Stepanski right behind at 2:14.63.
Ce'Aira Richardson was fifth in the 400 meter run heats and qualified for the finals on Friday with a time of 56.80.
Taylor Stepanski and Alicia Tomlin will both participate in the finals of the 1,500 meter run. Stepanski crossed the line with a time of 4:47.78 while Tomlin's time was 4:44.62.
Allison Dorr finished in sixth place with a time of 37:20.04 in her first 10,000 meter run at the championships while teammate Christina Micale had an eighth-place showing in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:14.82.
The teams will compete in Friday's final day of the championships. The field events begin at 11:00 a.m. and the running events are slated for 12:10 p.m.
