BIG RAPIDS - The SVSU track & field teams began competition at the 2016 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, hosted by Ferris State University at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Michigan. We will update this release daily on the progress of the Cardinals in the event.

Day One - Wednesday, May 4

SVSU had just two student-athletes participate on day one in adverse weather conditions, as Andrew Mudd and Sam Black competed in the decathlon for the Cardinals. After the opening five events, Sam Black leads with 3,536 points while teammate Andrew Mudd is right behind in second place with a tally of 3,505 points.

Black had his highest score in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.12 seconds, which garnered him 834 points. He got 785 points for his high jump heighth of 1.98 meters and another 771 with his 50.96 second performance in the 400 meter dash. Black added 632 points in the long jump (6.21 meters) and 514 in the shot put (10.47 meters). 

Mudd's highest scoring event came in the 100 as well, where his time of 11.15 seconds notched him 827 points. His 50.39 second time in the 400 meter dash got him another 797. He registered 657 points with a long jump of 6.32 meters. A high jump of 1.83 meters gave him 653 points while his fifth score came in the shot put, getting 571 points with a distance of 11.41 meters.

The decathlon gets underway Thursday (May 5) morning at 9:00 a.m. before the running and field events begin at 2:30 p.m.
