Track & Field Student-Athletes Earn All-Region Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Six Saginaw Valley State University track & field student-athletes earned USTFCCCA All-Region Honors on Monday (Feb. 29) for the 2015-16 NCAA Division II indoor track & field season.  Robert Atwater, D'omar Boyden, Andrew Mudd and Robert Tarpley earned the plaudits from the men's team while Anna Fochesato and Taylor Stepanski represent the women's team.

Atwater's top mark came in the High Jump event, where he cleared the bar at a height of 7'2.50" at the 2016 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Atwater was the champion for this event at the Championship Meet and was named "Freshman of the Meet" for field events as well. He is currently ranked 2nd nationally and 1st in the GLIAC for this recorded height, and has also broken a school record and tied the GLIAC record with that jump.

Boyden earned his all-region honors in the 60 Meter Hurdles event, with his best time of 8.20 being recorded at the SVSU Classic. He is currently ranked 32nd in the nation and is 3rd in the GLIAC for his time.

Mudd posted his mark in the Heptathlon with a score of 5,262, which he recorded at the Kent St. Golden Flash Gala Meet. This has Mudd currently ranked 7th in the nation and 2nd in the GLIAC.

Tarpley received his all-region plaudits in long jump and triple jump. He was the champion for Long Jump in the 2016 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships and broke an indoor school record with his distance mark of 24'6.25" earlier this season. This distance has him ranked 9th in the nation and 1st in the GLIAC. In the triple jump event, Tarpley also recorded a mark of 49'5.75" at the 2016 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, ranking him 15th in the nation and 3rd in the GLIAC.

For the women, Fochesato received her all-region honors in both the high jump and triple jump, as she was the champion in both of these events at the 2016 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. For high jump, she cleared a height of 5'7.25" ranking her 12th in the nation and 3rd in the GLIAC. In the triple jump event she recorded a distance of 39'6.0" and improved the school's indoor record that she set last year. That mark ranks her 14th in the nation and 1st in the GLIAC.

Stepanski earned her all-region plaudits in the 800 Meter Run, as her time of 2:12.23 won her a GLIAC Championship. Stepanski's best time of 2:09:62 was recorded at the SVSU Jets Pizza Invitational ranks her 6th in the nation and 1st in the GLIAC. 

The top five individuals in each event from each region earned the All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the regions' top three relay teams. The regions used for this award match those used during the cross country season.

The 2016 indoor season concludes on March 11-12, with the NCAA Division II National Championships. They will be hosted on the campus of Pittsburg State (Kan.).
