Track & Field Hosts SVSU Holiday Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track & field team competed in the 2015 SVSU Holiday Classic, hosted by the Cardinals in the Fieldhouse on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. Both teams kicked off the indoor season with several high scoring finishes.

Distance runners Joey Southgate, Eddie Komph, and Tom Goforth finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively in the 5000 meter run. It was an extremely tight race, with Southgate coming in at 14:46.42 and Komph and Goforth finishing two hundredths of a second apart at 14:47.46 and 14:47.48.

D'Omar Boyden took second place for the men in the 60 meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.27. In the 800 meter run, Jordan Walters earned first for the Cardinals, recording a time of 1:53.17. Both Boyden and Walters provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.

For the women, Ce'Aira Richardson finished first in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 57.05, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships. The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Richardson, DeAnna Stickler-Gatson, Ola Hendler and Domonique Smith also took first with a time of 3:53.7.

The Lady Cardinals took first through third in the 600 meter run. Stickler-Gatson, Lina Davis, and Hendler took the top three spots, respectively. Stickler-Gatson broke SVSU's 31 year old record, posting a time of 1:34.95.

In the field events, the SVSU men took first and second in the Long Jump. Robert Tarpley earned first place by leaping 7.16 meters, followed by Robert Atwater earning second with a jump of 6.90 meters. Tarpley provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships. Atwater also provisionally qualified for nationals in the High Jump and took second, crossing the bar at 2.11 meters.

Devin Hartnagle earned third place in the men's Weight Throw, recording a distance of 17.94 meters and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships.

In the women's Triple Jump, Anna Fochesato claimed victory with a distance of 11.58 meters and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.

The Cardinals return to the oval on January 15th, when they host the SVSU Classic.  The start time for field events begins at 2:30 pm in the SVSU Fieldhouse.
