Men’s Team Earns Win Against Calvin as Both Teams Fall to Grand Valley in Tri-Meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program traveled to the west side of the state for a tri-meet against Calvin College and Grand Valley State University Saturday afternoon. The men's team defeated Calvin with a score of 178 to 120 and lost to Grand Valley 188.5 to 108.5. The women lost both with scores of 154-144 against the Knights and 228-69 against the Lakers.

Coming off being named men's swimmer of the week, Benjamin Wainman shined winning both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle. Wainman finished both with times of 4:32.62 and 9:18.95. Alexa Hieber also had a great performance in the distance events placing second in both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle with marks of 5:11.68 and 10:35.47.

A'lmos Szedlak took home all three medals with a first-place, second place and third-place finish. Szedlak won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.92, took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:39.89 and third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.87 seconds, just 2.20 seconds behind the record set last season.

Logan Fox placed first and second in his two individual events and took third as a team in both the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays. Fox took home gold in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.69 nearly breaking his own record of 53.31. He took second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:06.11, which is nearly seven seconds behind the record of 1:59.68 set in 2016. It is the only men's swimming and diving record out of the 23 that was not set under head coach Jason Lintjer.

In the relays, Fox teamed up with Hadyn Gould, Josh Rottier, and Alvaro Rodriguez for a time of 1:32.29 in the 200-yard medley relay, good enough for third. He started the 200-yard freestyle relay with Eric Slabbert, Rottier, and Joao Pedro Nogueira and placed third with a time of 1:23.47.

Other top performances came from Samantha Fowler taking second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.41 and the women's team taking third in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Roni Markwood, Ella Yantz, Nina Pavlovic Cano, and Ella DesJean finished with a time of 1:41.24.
