BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Saginaw Valley State University swimming & diving team competed in the final day of the 2017 NCAA Division II Championships on Saturday (Mar. 11) in Birmingham, Alabama. The Cardinals finished 25th in the annual event, totaling 32 points overall. The 25th place showing is a 12-place improvement, with the ladies finishing 37th overall at last year's championships.
Day Four
- Amanda Thielen earned all-american honors for the Cardinals, notching an eighth place finish in the 200 backstroke. She was eighth in the prelims with her time of 1:59.95, following that up with an eighth place showing in the finals with a mark of 2:02.42. The eighth place showing is the highest in program history in the national championships for SVSU.
- Rebeca Martinez competed in the same event, finishing 20th overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.09.
- Lydia Mattar finished 20th overall in the 200 backstroke for SVSU, touching the board with a time of 2:18.16.
- Shaun Yap competed in the 200 breaststroke on the men's side, ending up 23rd overall with his mark of 2:02.50.
- The Cardinals' 400 freestyle relay team finished in 33rd place, as Martinez, Alexandra Davis, Alexa Bloom and Melanie Soenksen finished with a time of 3:32.50.
- Soenksen was 45th in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 52.79.

Saturday's events complete the 2016-17 campaign for Saginaw Valley, which wraps-up the third season in school history on the women's side and just the second for the men.
