Melanie Soenksen Named CollegeSwimming Division II GLIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week

Saginaw Valley State University junior swimming student-athlete Melanie Soenksen has been selected as the top athlete in the GLIAC by collegeswimming.com for her performance this past weekend's meets against Alma College and Findlay.

Soenksen swam well for the Cardinals in the opening meet against Alma College. She grabbed the top shot in the 50-yard Free at a personal best 23.87 seconds. Her next event would be the 100-yd Free, where she took top honors.  

The junior then swam against Findlay on Saturday and placed well for the Cardinals. She grabbed four victories by finishing first in the 200 yard Medley relay and secured the top spot in her next event, the 50-yard Freestyle in a time of 24.22 seconds. Soenksen set a new personal best in the pool with her 53.75 second time in the 100 Free while swimming the fastest leg of the 200 Free 'A' team relay at 24.56 seconds. 

The Cardinals emerged victorious in its first two meets of the 2016-17 season. SVSU Women grabbed the 174-89 victory while the Men rolled to a 181-52 final result. SVSU would do the same to Findlay on Saturday. The Cardinals Womens team finished with a 180-109 score over the Oilers with the men securing a 184-107 win.

SVSU's next meet is scheduled in Marquette, Mich. on October 29. They will face GLIAC foes Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan.
