Todd Buckingham enters his eighth season as head coach of the SVSU softball team after being hired in June of 2012.  

In 2019, the Cardinals posted a record an overall record of 28-24 and went 16-16 in GLIAC play. Freshman Jackie Popko earned First-Team All-GLIAC honors. Aubree Mouthaan, Shelby Misiak and Blasia Moyler earned Second-Team All-GLIAC honors. Sophomores Meagan VerVaecke and Julia Salisbury were named to the Honorable Mention All-GLIAC team as well. The Cardinals finished their season falling to Northwood in Day 2 of the GLIAC tournament. 

In 2018, Saginaw Valley went 29-27 overall and 16-14 in the conference. Meredith Rousse earned First-Team All-GLIAC, First-Team All-Midwest Regional, and Honorable Mention All-American honors. Courtney Reeves earned Second-Team All-GLIAC and All-Midwest Regional honors as well. Four Cardinals earned Second-Team All-GLIAC honros including Danielle Hamilton, Maddy Burgess, Anna Conard, and Aubree Mouthaan. Evy Lobdell and Lauren Bachert also earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors. The Cardinals finished their season after a split in the Midwest Regionals. 

In 2017, the Cardinals posted a record of 37-16 overall and 14-8 in the GLIAC. Courtney Reeves, Samantha Willman and Meredith Rousse earned First-Team All-GLIAC honors. Lauren Bachert earned Second-Team All-GLIAC honors while Evy Lobdell and Aubree Mouthaan earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors. Saginaw Valley defeated Grand Valley to claim the GLIAC Championship. Courtney Reeves also earned First-Team All-Midwest, All-Midwest Region First-Team and D2CCA All-American Honorable Mention honors. Meredith Rousse earned Second-Team All-Midwest Second-Team All-Midwest Regional honors at second base. Samantha Willman also earned Second-Team All-Miwest Regional honors. The Cardinals traveled all the way to the Midwest Regional Finals before falling to Indianapolis.  

In 2016, the Cardinals went 32-17 overall and 15-11 in the conference. After winning the first round of the GLIAC Tournament over Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley fell to Findlay in round two. Four members of the SVSU softball team earned All-GLIAC honors.

For the 2015 season, Buckingham coached his team to a record of 33-19 overall and 18-6 in the GLIAC. The SVSU softball team fell to Wayne State in the GLIAC championship match.

In 2014, Buckingham's team went 26-11 overall. In the GLIAC, SVSU went 18-6 for the season. 2 Cardinals were named  First Team All-GLIAC, Amanda Best and Mackenzie Rousse. 5 other players were named to the All-GLIAC second team and honorable mention.

During his first year at SVSU, The Cardinals finished with a 12-12 GLIAC record, missing the post-season by just one win. The GLIAC finish was a four-game improvement from the previous year. The 2013 campaign saw SVSU receive its first 1^st Team All-GLIAC award since 2011 with Lindsay Hayward receiving the honor. The 2013 SVSU softball program also earned unprecedented success in the classroom, having 6 players named to the GLIAC All-Academic team (GPA of 3.0-3.49) and 8 players named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence team (GPA of 3.5-4.0). The program’s current cumulative GPA sits at 3.35.

Before the move to Michigan, Buckingham spent six seasons at IU Southeast after being named the first head coach in school history in 2006. He amassed a 186-111 record while leading the school to six straight Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) titles and three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) postseason appearances, including an Elite 8 appearance in 2012. He was named KIAC Coach of the Year twice and NAIA Regional Coach of the Year in 2008.

During his six seasons at IU Southeast, Buckingham coached 30 of his former players to all-conference awards, 5 KIAC Pitcher of the Year winners, and three to NAIA Academic All-American accolades.

Before taking over at IU Southeast, Buckingham coached at Bluefield State College, an NCAA Division II program in Bluefield, West Virginia, for five seasons. While there, he set the career record for softball coaching victories and led the program to its first winning season in school history. He was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Coach of the Year in 2005.

Buckingham also served as one of two coaches for USA Athletes International, Inc. (USAAI). He took a team of U.S. softball players to Spain in the summer of 2008 and traveled to Australia in 2009 and 2010.

Other accomplishments include serving on the Camps Committee for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, acting as softball chair for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Conference and being invited as a guest lecturer for two Louisville Slugger National Softball Conventions.

A native of Corydon, Ind., Buckingham received a bachelor’s degree in biology education from Olivet Nazarene University in 1998. Upon graduation, he remained in Indiana to teach Science at South Central Junior/Senior High School in Elizabeth in 1998, and then taught Math and Science at St. Joseph School in Corydon, Ind. from 1999 to 2001.

Todd resides in Essexville with his wife Ashly and stepdaughter Ally.
