Softball Sweeps Parkside on the Road

KENOSHA, WIS. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team swept Parkside on the road to increase its conference record by two wins on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (24-15, 11-5 GLIAC) took game one 8-1 before closing out the day with a 6-0 victory in game two.

GAME ONE – SVSU 8 – PARKSIDE 1

Emily Depew (W, 12-5) got the start for the Cardinals and went the distance to record her 12th complete game of the season. Depew faced 31 batters, striking out 10 and giving up seven hits while allowing just one run in the winning effort. It is the first time the senior from Lowell, Michigan, recorded double-digit Ks in a game since 2021 (the seventh time in her career).

Emma Helvie scored the first runs of the game with her first career home run to left field that also scored Alyssa Muench for the 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Olivia Sabin added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning with a home run to center field (her third of the season) to score Maddie Campagna and Marissa Beck to increase the lead to 5-0. Sara Moos doubled later in the inning to bring Mya Purdy home and the Cardinals led 6-0 after five innings.

Purdy homered to lead off the seventh inning to increase the lead to 7-0. It is Purdy's fifth home run of the season. Muench doubled to right center to bring Moos home for the final SVSU run of game one.

A single through the left side scored a run for the Rangers in the bottom half of the seventh to put the score where it would remain through the end of the contest.

Helvie led the way for SVSU with two hits and two RBI in game one. Purdy and Moos added two hits and an RBI. Sabin had a team-high three RBI with her hit in game one. Purdy scored two runs, while Moos scored one. Moos hit two doubles and increased her hitting streak to six games heading into the second game of the afternoon.

GAME TWO – SVSU 6 – PARKSIDE 0

Ella Reifschneider singles to right center to lead off the first inning of the game. Aalana Kimble then doubled to right field to score Reifschneider for the 1-0 lead. Moos singled to second base a few plays later to score Purdy and Kimble to increase the advantage to 3-0. Paige Kolinski singled up the middle to bring Moos home and the Cardinals led 4-0 after the first inning.

Kimble (W, 6-4) got the start for SVSU and went 5.0 innings to earn her sixth win of the season. Kimble allowed four hits and no runs while striking out one Ranger. Muench saw 2.0 innings in relief as she closed out the game allowing no hits and striking out three batters.

Reifschneider scored on a throw home during a flyout play to push the lead to 5-0 in the top of the second inning.

Moos added a run on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Purdy for the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Moos was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI in game two to improve her current hitting streak to seven straight games. The senior third baseman has produced multiple hits in three of the last four games for the Cardinals. Reifschneider, Kimble, and Purdy recorded two hits in the game. Kimble and Kolinski contributed one RBI. Purdy and Reifschneider scored two runs in the game-two victory.

UP NEXT

The SVSU softball team will return home and host Grand Valley State on Thursday, April 18 in a GLIAC doubleheader. Game one of that meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM EST.
